I am, as Im sure many of you are, getting ready for Turkey season. One of my favorite parts of this preparation is getting and practicing new calls.
This year I am looking for a box call and a push pull call as well as an owl hooter. Any of you guys have any suggestions on which calls are best?
I have some ideas, just want to hear what others have to say. I am not looking to spend obscene amounts of money, but I AM a firm believer in "you get what you pay for".

Thanks

I don't know anything about the push calls. The box calls that I think sound the best are custom made, and I've seen several good ones for 20 bucks or less.

How about adding a good diaphragm call to your repertoire? That's about all I use.

Yeah, I use mouth calls more than any of the others combined, just not in the market for any right now and I know the ones I like. Same with the slate.

There`s lots of good sounding box calls but probably the best way to get one you like is to work it and hear it for yourself, alot of times the same brand can sound different. You just never know, one person might like the sound of a certain call while another person might not care too much for the same sound. Because of that I kinda hate to recommend any certain call. Like Hammer said, alot of custom made calls sound really good but without actually hearing the one you`ll be getting you`re taking a chance of not being happy with it after you get it. If you can find some cheap enough it might be worth taking the chance. There`s usually some on Ebay that aren`t priced very high. If you have any local places that sell turkey calls go and give all the brands they have a try. The same goes for push pull calls but I will say I`m going to check out Knight & Hales tom coffin because of the features it has. If they sound good I will have one. They also make an excellent owl hooter if you know how to use it. (the one I have sounds really good anyway)

You really have to try box calls out for yourself and go from there. They all sound different, and you should try to tune your sound to what the turkeys sound like in your area. Remember, it isn't about what you think sounds good, it is about what the TURKEY thinks sounds good! I will say that Knight and Hale's push button style call has worked well for me, that is until I accidentally sat on it one morning and ended the life of that call! LOL!

I like my primos heartbreaker. I have killed several birds with it.

I killed my first two birds using the Knight and Hale fighting purr. As far as locator calls, I have much more success with an owl hooter than I ever did with crow call. I hear peacock call is good too.

That is one reason I am looking into an Owl hooter, no luck with the crow call.

Bill Cartwright here in Kentucky makes a wonderful call. Named Coalfield calls, I believe. His website is: http://www.coalfieldgamecalls.com/

I've got a real nice limited edition long box made by a gentleman that posts on here sometimes. It's a Kentucky Thunder box call #66. Sadly no longer available. Anyone know this fella? Hi John LOL

Certainly, some calls sound better than others. As to what box call or push-pull sounds the best, i can't honestly say. I would have to have tried them all to give you an opinion! The bottom line is that they ALL will work on a turkey. Having said that however, i really loved my ole Perfection push-pull call. But i broke it and as far as i know, they don't make them anymore. Best of luck to you this spring! Actually, my signature below this reply pretty much sums up!

One of nicest box calls is made by Albert Paul in MS. He is a Neil Cost prodigy. http://www.paulscalls.com/

The cost but they sound great are really a work of art.

As far as Push-Pin calls I had my best success last year with the Knight & Hale Lonesome Hen and it's the call I used to kill my only bird last year. They responded to it better than any other call I used, but I'm the world's worst with a diaphram. Plan on having the K & H Tom Coffin this year also, and a new Box call, not sure which yet. These 2 are my favorite types!

I've called a few turkeys with a push pull call made by the late Doug Camp. It was my favorite call. Something happened to it last spring and the sweet sounds turned sour. I've looked far and wide for another just in case that happened but I can't find one that comes close. Maybe something will turn up in Nashville next month.
