other than practice what are some tips to using a mouth call effectively???
I've thought about buying a call set like Primos with the instructional CD along with the calls. But I'm up for anything, I've blowed and huffed my brains out for the last 2 yrs and still sound like a dying rabbit!!:o

Been there and done that!!!! Your on the right track with the Primos CD. It's how I learned. Just a quick tip though, right off the CD. I found out that the reason that I couldn't learn to use mouth calls was that I needed a call that had a narrower frame. Most kids and women can't use a normal mouth call because the palate in the roof of their mouth is narrower. Thus they have to use a narrower, sometimes called "youth model" in their mouth. Alot of men, like myself, also need these narrower calls as well. I'm not talking about the tape that surrounds the call, but the actual metal frame inside. If your palate is too narrow, a regular sized call will allow air to go around the call, thus the dying rabbit sounds you described. :) I tried to use mouth calls for years, then I bought the Primos CD, with 3 calls. The CD mentioned the narrower frame concept, and one of the calls (a Cuttin' Hook call) had a narrower frame. As soon as I put it in my mouth I was making turkey sounds! For the next 2 months I was calling turkeys on my way to work, with the CD in the car. Even if you don't need the narrower frame, I'd still recommend the CD. By the way, called one in last spring with a mouth call for the first time!

I Have never watched the video by primos but watching a video would have been alot easier than the way I started took me about 3 or 4 months every day with a call in my mouth trying to figure it out then one day it just happend and i haven't used anything else since.I know other guys that say they never use anything other than a slate call or box call but using a mouth call is just so much easier to me.

Start practicing now and and dont stop even if you figure it out, once you figure it out you will laugh at how easy it is.

Without seeing or hearing it`s hard to say what the problem might be. Too much tongue pressure maybe? Do you drop your jaw and tongue when you`re calling? Might be the calls you use, I can`t find any now days that I like so I make mine.

don't 'blow'. You have to bring your air across the diaphragm from deep down just like you do when you use a duck call.

It's sort of like not holding your mouth right when you're fishing.:D
Seriously, you have to get a call that fits the roof of your mouth perfectly to really learn. Once you learn how to make the sounds, you can call with most any of them. I still trim a few of my calls to get them feeling just right.
If you're just making noise, you're on the right track. Keep messing with it, and lo and behold, a turkey sound will come out eventually.

Billybob,
I just learned in the last 2 weeks. I had to break myself of my gag reflex first. After that I bought the Primos instructional DVD, it has a easy to blow double reed call in it. Start with the basic mouth calls. I keep mine in damn near all day and randomly cluck and yelp on it. In the car to and from work and at night if I don't drive the family nuts with it.

I think a lot of people make the mistake and buy a tripple reed or a cutting type call which takes a little more expeience to call with. I would start out with a single or doubble and as others touched on .....one that fits. I learned on and still do better with a small frame/youth diaphram call than the adult versions. I also used one of Primos "PiggyBacked" or stacked reed calls last spring....it worked good and was easy to make yelps and cutts with. The design of theses do not require a lot of force to call with. ;)

Well I picked up the Primos CD with 3 calls and can do most of the call but I can't get them to sound right. I can't make the low pitch or tone when clucking or yelping, any of you guys got any ideas or suggestion to help me????

Two calls I think are really hard to perfect on the diaphragm: The putt or cluck and then of course, the purr. Now there is a difference between a putt for a contest and a putt for the real tom. The real tom is not so critical. Champion callers make the prettiest sounding clucks...I have been using mouth calls for years and I still am not satisfied with my cluck.
At least 50% of the people I've heard use a mouth call cannot purr on a mouth call. It is easy to get the sound, but controlling it and manipulating the pitch is tough.
So, I guess what I'm saying is if you are interested in calling a live tom, perfect calls aren't neccessary. If you are interested in winning championships, practice, practice, and practice some more. I watched a contest in Nashville one time. The contestants all delivered the finest kee-kee runs I'd ever heard. I have hunted turkeys for years both in the spring and fall and have never used a kee-kee run...

There are a lot of brands out there and they all call differently. On the plus side, their fairly cheap. I'd recommend trying a few different companies to see which works best for you. I initially practiced every day with a video. I then kept my calls in my auto and practiced to and from work. Ya gotta keep blowin every day till ya get it! Then you'll end up wanting to practice new styles, ever learning.

Uh Jeremy .....If you cant make them sound right then you cant do most of them.....
The best advice Ive ever seen for making a yep is written on the primos or HS instructions.....Just say the word Chick or Chaulk......The drop in note from hi to low pitch comes from dropping the back of the jaw while never changing the pressure of your tongue.........start slow and deliberate making both individual notes.....Then pick up the pace to produce a realistic sound of a hen yelping.
Remember that you dont have to sound like Eddie Salter to be effective with a turkey call......Goodluck

I have used a mouth call for several years. i cannot purr on the blame thing. I have tried and tried. I just cannot get the hang of it. I started of by saying Turk, Turk, Turk. That turns into a yelp.
Born to hunt,
i was sitting in the woods one day and could not get a gobble. Just for the heck of it, i started doing a Kee-Kee Run and got a gobbler to gobble. He would only gobble when I made the Kee-Kee Run.

I got the purr down pretty easy, I keep pressure on the call and blow through my lips making them vibrate, it's alittle on the loud side but it sure kicked up my confidence about using mouth calls:D
