Looking for a gun for mainly waterfowl hunting. Don't know much about shotguns, always been a deer hunter. Could probably spend around 500, maybe a little more. Don't know much about chokes or shell or barrell length either. All advice greatly appreciated.

I'm presently shooting a winchester super x2 12 guage. About $800.00 or maybe up to $900.00 new but you can find used ones for around $500.00. Its a 3 1/2 in. semi auto. I've used it for over 2 years now and NEVER had one single problem with it.I usually shoot inproved cylinder or modified, depends where and what type of hunting(timber, fields, open water) I'm doing. Definately a good waterfowl gun in my opinion. Also mine has a 26" barrel, points really good. 28" isn't to bad either. I usually shoot 3" #2's for ducks sometimes 3 1/2" #2's if in fields or open water. 3 1/2" BB's for geese

Just going by it seems you are just starting up in the sport and for the money you mentioned. You may want to think the 870 Remington Super Express. It'll shoot any shell made. Has chokes, barrels and every add-on you can think about.
It's a pump, not a semi-auto.

I have never hunted waterfowl so, I can't comment on that. I have used an 870 for a number of years and it has performed flawlessly. I bough a new Beretta a while back...it is a trap semi-auto that I bought for field use and it fits me better than any scatter gun I've ever shouldered. I think the key is finding the proper fit.

I have to agree with Turkey hunter, the 870's are about the best all around shotgun you can get.
