Leupold....if you can't afford that, try a Simmons or Tasco if you can find an one. Depending on the range you expect to be hunting, you might want a variable power.

I put a straight 2 power Leupold Extended eye relief on my 44 Mag. It does fine and is alittle more forgiving on hand movement than a 4 power. I can shoot a can at 100 yds all day with it. I would not use a variable power scope on a handgun. Just my 2 cts worth,, :D

I have been using an Aimpoint red dot on mine. It has "zero" magnification and unlimited eye relief. You can shoot with both eyes open. Very fast to get on target. I would check them out before making a decision. The only downside is it requires a battery. A fresh battery will run the scope for about 2 weeks if you forget to turn it off (which I do all the time!). If you turn it off when not in use it will easily last an entire hunting season. Rick

I really like leupold's 1.5x5 eer it is the best I've found so far.

I used the red dots foe awhile, but it limits your range over a a scope because of it not having much magnifacation. I could hit at the same range with open sights as I could with the red dot. the scope is better IMO.
I have had a Leupold M-8 4X on my Contender 30-30 for 20 years or more. I have never had to zero it.

I have a simmons 1.5 on my .480, love it and have punished the gun with heavy loads and it has held up. Cant go wrong with a leupold either.

To each his own. I have no trouble hitting a 6" bullseye at 100 yards with the Aimpoint. That's much better than I can do with the open sights and further than I should be shooting at deer with my .41 magnum.

As multi said, it depends on how much you're willing to spend. I've had pistol scopes from Leupold, Nikon and Burris on heavy recoiling T/C's and all three held up well. If you can't afford one of these yet, I'd suggest saving up and hold out for a quailty scope, it'll pay off in the long run. As for what power, I'd go with a 2X over a 4X. 2X is plenty of power for your 44mag and with you being new to the sport, its quite a bit easier to hold off handed than the 4X at longer ranges.
