Eastern KY WMA Habitat Improvement

It is my understanding that there was discussion during the 12/7/01 commission meeting on the eastern KY WMA small game habitat improvement resolution proposed by the KY Grouse Hunters Association and unanimously approved at the League convention. Could someone who was present provide a summary of the discussion, the current status and the next step in the process?

I heard tonight that the Dept of F&W is supposed to
start working with the local clubs in the E. KY
area for habitat clearings.
Seems like the locals have been waiting for a while
and finally they are getting some input and help
from the Dept. I do know some of the members of the
Grouse clubs in E. KY and they are very dedicated
fellows. I wish them well.

The dept. has had a few meetings with some local hunters. I've been to one of the earlier ones--very constructive. Seasonal employees are being hired along with some contractors to reclaim some grouse habitat that has become too old. Look for this kind of work to expand in the future.

The KY Grouse Hunters Association is based out of Paintsville. Our primary purpose is to present a united voice for grouse hunters on various issues under consideration by the KDFWR. Currently, we are working with the department to develop a habitat improvement project on eastern KY WMA's. We also have several activities throughout the year, which are mostly just for fun (weekend hunts, field trials, sporting clays, game dinners, etc.) If you are interested in joining, there is a club hunt next weekend.
