THE RABBIT

The hunter lets the tailgate down
To free the waiting hounds
While he gathers shells and gun
He hears their baying sound.

The dogs have got a rabbit up,
He knows they’ll come around.
The rabbit doubles back, and then
Heads for safer ground

But the dogs were bred for the chase
Their noses for trails uncoiling.
The rabbit, also bred to race,
Uses tricks in foiling

Now he hears them coming near
And gets into position.
They’ve made a loss, again I fear
Find that elusive magician

A shell is slipped into the breech
Much, just out of habit.
For he can tell by their speech,
Tis not a one trick rabbit

And if you ask me how he knew,
I’d say it was a hunch.
For the dogs can lose a thousand times,
The rabbit only once!

CPA that cute where are you from and where do you hunt. I'm from eastern ky. We had a lot of cotton tails up here this year. Have you ever hunted the Appalachian Cotton Tail? Their smaller and more red than our normal cotton tails and they prefer wooded areas. I done a show this year on them and saw them for the first time.

Birdman, no I have never hunted those rabbits. I hunt usually within an hour of so of Louisville--in just about every direction. I did get 2 rabbits this year in a wooded area that were a very different color from the normal cottontail--almost a rust color. Maybe they were of the same line.
