my wifes grandfather passed away a few years ago, and we ended up with his old marlin model 336 30-30. we also ended up with a box of remington ammo, 150gr core lokt bullets. the box is white and green with red writing on it. the shell holder is styro foam....i am assuming possibly the middle 1970's or maybe earlier.
i took that old gun out and shot it the other day, with that old ammo. it shot perfect with new ammo, and the old stuff.....just goes to show once a manufacturer finds a good recipe for ammo and stays with it things just dont change...
i took the old gun out on sunday morning. iron sights and all....managed to harvest a doe with it. it may seem trivial to some, but for me, i have always hunted with a rifle with a scope. iron sights are new to me for hunting. while in the military we didnt have scopes, so the nastalgia was really neat for me.
i have a newfound respect for those who hunt with the trusty thuddy thuddy....the old core lokts performed very well, shot her thru both lungs, really expecting a short trailing job after the shot, but she went straight to the ground.....couldnt ask for anything better.
