Anybody have a 7 MM in the new WSM "short magnum"? If you do, how do you like it and what types of ammo do you use.

I haven't used the 7 MM WSM, I do have a 300 Rem SAUM and a 300 WSM. I have shot deer with both with a variety of bullets...both performed well.

My wife's uncle bought a 7 MM WSM last year and has shot one deer with it using Winchester factory fodder. He really likes it. I chose 300's just because of 30 cal bullet selection (I handload).

I bought the .270 wsm for my son 2 years ago and he loves it. The .270 and the 7mm are about the same. From what I've heard it is a sweet round.

I've shot two deer with one using 140 gr. Winchester factory ammo. First deer took a shot to the lungs and just stood there (seemed like an eternity) for about 20 seconds before I finished it off. Distance was +/- 120 yards. Same shot on the second deer and it dropped in it's tracks. Distance was +/- 290 yards. I measured the distances with a GPS.

I really wasn't impressed with the bullet holes on either deer. The holes seemed too small.

Keep in mind that I "moved up" from a .243 to have more punch at longer distances. I chose the 7MM WSM to have 7mm Mag performance with a short cartridge/action and I really like it.

Bottom line: I like it a lot but don't have a lot of confidence in the Winchester bullets.

itoo had the same results with the win.in my 7 mag !!
i used them this year because they patterned a little better but i have to say the rem coreloct put the deer down quick , big entrey and huge exit instant blood.. the winchester i had to track 30 to 50 yards to even find blood..
just my experiance with these ammos.. both deer were shot at 100 yards in the lungs..
needless to say im back with the rems next year.....

Which factory bullets were you guys using?

I have been using polymer tipped bullets for a couple of years just experimenting to see how they perform on game. So far, I've used Hornady's SST's, and Nosler's Ballistic Tips...can't say I think that much of their performance, but they have not failed....6 shots...six dead deer.

the winchester bullets i used were the polymer tiped,

Same type of bullets here too.

I suppose I shouldn't complain, they took both deer down without having to trail them.

They drilled straight through both deer but the damage done had a really small diameter. It's like the bullets didn't expand or expand well. Almost like, what I think, a FMJ bullet would do.
