I've hunted the last 13 yrs with an old 7x57 mauser and taken several with it. Most drop in their tracks. Unfortunately it wasn't on when I shot it earlier this year and I had to hunt with another gun. I hope the scope just got knocked off some how because I love using that old gun.

Killed a big doe Saturday (2nd one) with a No.4 Mk1 Enfield, .303 British. Good shooter, though the sights leave something to be desired. Heavy sonofagun to carry around too. Don't know much about ballistics, but I've been told that hunting loads currently manufactured for that round would place it somewhere between 30-30 & .308 in performance. In any case, it seems to do a fine job on deer. Got it at Swallen's 12 years ago for $70 I think. This is the first year I've hunted with it.

If I had gone deer hunting this year, I would have taken a 4mk1 myself. Great rifles. You can get a no-drill scope mount for it that works good and is sturdy. I love my Mosins but that old Enfield is my favorite.

Hi Auk, do you know where I could find one of those scope mounts? I don't need to turn her into a long range demon, but a 4x would probably work real nice, or even a better set of open sights if there are any being sold that would fit this gun. Thanks

Mine is a S&K no-drill scope mount, got it from Brownell's
(www.brownells.com (http://www.brownells.com)) for about 60 bucks i think. You can search their catalog and find it, and I think there are other scope mounts you can buy for the enfields too. Very solid and holds zero, and fairly easy to install. I did have to do a little filing on the underside of it to get enough clearance for my bolt to cycle, but it only took about an hour total to mount it and get it working.
I had to put a set of Weaver extension rings on it to get enough room to mount a 3-9x40 scope, but I like the setup. Its a whole lot nicer than that peep sight that came on the rifle. A 4x would probably be plenty of scope, but I used a 3-9 cause I had an extra one laying around.

Thanks Auk. Like the way you think, use what ya already have if it's suitable! I have another Enfield with the micrometer rear sight, it allows for finer aiming & is click adjustable for elevation. Unfortunately that rifle is not as accurate. May try to swap the sights if they are compatible but the scope mount is intriguing.

If I could have gone hunting this year, I would have used my M48 mauser.

If so I would love to hear about it.isnt it a 200 gr bullet??,them guns can shoot way out there ,a friend of mine had one, it would flat stomp a deer, hell of a deer gun..we were shooting out to 400 yards at a rim off of a tractor and we had it panted white, you could see everytime you hit it a black spot would be were the bullet hit,and we were using open sites and barley holding up,it was pretty amazing, its a really loud gun,he had the shorter barrel one i think, but it was a shooter...

Anyone heard of a 7.62 x 65 (yes, the 65 is correct)? My father-in-law hunt with one and since I have internet access, it was my job last year for Christmas to locate him some ammo. All I found was some milsurp FMJ ammo from Argentina. I got it for him and we filed the tips off.
Is that a .312 diameter bullet? I think next year for Christmas, I'll get him some bullets to reload with.
