I bought a live cage trap,so I can trap a gray squirrel alive for my 3 month old feist pup,so I can build a training facility to show my pup, what he should be hunting come this fall when the leaves are off.I was trying to see if anyone out there has any ideas on the best way to trap a gray squirrel alive,in a live cage trap, and what kind of bait would be the best to lure one in the trap[?]
I see you are from up east. Most of those squirrels have plenty to eat. If you can find a high density of them, try making a ball of shelled corn and peanut butter. Place it on a limb off the ground and cover it up. You will want to cover the front opening with sheet metal that has a hole about the size of a tennis ball. Otherwise y'll get possums, coons and such. Also, check the Regs. You gotta wait on season.

Hey George911! I have a Jack Russell pup and am working the same venture. Problem is though, my squirrel died. Must have been too stressed from being in its cage longer than it should have been. The little fella only lasted a day and a half. The dog got to fight him through the wires (no damage to squirrel) but never got to chase it. I trapped him in a 6x6 2 door trap during the trapping season in a friends' attic using apple slices coated with peanut butter. Good luck!

trap one of your back yard squirrels and use a slice of bread as bait.
