View Full Version : Lowest recoil in a 12 gauge sabot slug?

I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge with rifled barrell. I have shot Remington 2 1/2 inch sabots, Winchester 2 1/2 inch supreme partition golds, and Lighfield's. The winchester partition golds and Lightfields seem to be the most accurate but both are heavy on recoil. What would be an accurate sabot slug that is lower on recoil?

I know what you mean by the recoil level of a 12 gauge sabot slug! I injured a nerve in my right shoulder once while sighting in an Ithaca M-37 12 gauge slug gun. The slug brands and types you mentioned all have heavy recoil. I guess the most accurate one with a lighter recoil level would be the "Reduced Recoil" loads that Remington put out. Not sure if they come in a sabot loading though. You could do like I did and trade your 12 gauge for a 20 gauge sabot firing slug gun, as it has much less recoil than a 12.

Thanks for the input. The reason I bought the gun is that it came with a slug barrel (deer season) and a smooth barrel with threee chokes (turkey season). One gun for both seasons. Basically, I was trying to save some money. I all ready killed two deer with a friends 20 gauge and sabot rounds. Didn't even feel the recoil. The 12 gauge is a womper compared to that. Might look into the other rounds. However the Winchesters zero out at 150 yards and only have a 3 inch drop at 200 yards. I may just put up with the recoil. Had it at the range using Lightfield 3 inch mag sabots yesterday. The gun was dead on at 100 yards.

Put a good kick pad on it and consider a recoil reducer in the stock, that should tame it. Thats what I did to my slug gun.:D

Shot a large doe this morning with the Mossberg 500. Used the Winchester sabots. Because of the amount of clothes on, didn't really feel the recoil. I'm sold on these loads now. I shot the doe at around 75 yards. The sabot dropped her right where she was standing. One week ago I shot a buck and a doe with a 20 gauge and some Remington sabot rounds. Both of them ran for about 50-75 yards before falling. All three deer were lung shots.

Given that the Winchesters will zero out at 150 yards. . .I'll stick with them

Not sure which Win. load your using, but the Std. Vel. Sabot load is a little weak for big body deer. Plus the lead is a little soft. The projectile will flatten out to about half dollar size, which is good except it limits penertration. I prefer the Remington Copper Solids as a better all around slug.

1st deer i shot with a slugun was last year. shot a doe from my stand i hung by my boot /harness watching her run away with a huge hole and floppy broken leg haha, talk about recoil. But it gets the job done :)

I am using the Winchester 2 3/4 inch partition gold sabots. They reach a velocity of 1900 fps. The balistics chart recommend zeroing at 150 yards. Hold 3 inch high at 175 yards. I used the Winchester Supreme turkey loads this spring and was impressed. This load dropped a large doe at 75 yards where she stood no problem.

That sounds great. What kind of pattern did you get at 150 yards, and what does the chart say about deer 25 to 75 yards away, are you hitting high? I am looking for a new sabot to shoot. I think I am going to try the new hornady sabot, it has a ballistic tip.

I won't recommend one but I can sure as heck tell you about one that kicks like a mule. I tried some Remington Buckhammers in my wifes 20 gauge and they kicked worse than my 12. Wicked load no doubt but very punishing.

remington makes 2 sabot slugs that i am aware of copper solid and bonded sabot. the bonded sabot is the best slug i have ever shot.in comparison to the lightfields, hornady, winchester, pmc, and federal but the remington kicks the hardest through my mossburg 835 rifled slug barrel.the next best slug was the federal vital shock.

I have never shot one, but i'd hope you wouldnt fill it. i mean its kinda like turkey hunting, when you get it in your sights you start to get nervouse then boom, you dont even think bout the recoil

I'd recommend that you try some 2 3/4" Winchester lead slugs. They're cheap and in a rifled barrel, I don't think you'll notice much difference in performance vs. the sabots. I've tried them all and in a rifled barrel, the difference is insignificant. Plus, they don't kick very much. Much less than a turkey load (even a 2 3/4" turkey load). And they get the job done.

One thing I've learned is that cost and performance don't always go up together.
