Is it okay to shoot slugs with my smooth bore shotgun ? and if so what brand would you recommend.

Yes, try Rem. Buckhammer even though they are recommended for rifled barrels. If they don't shoot well, just buy the standard punkin ball rifled deer slugs.

Regular 12 gauge Foster slugs, like Remington Sluggers are about $2.30 a box of five(5). Sabot types and other "new" types are about $2.00 EACH.

Buying a rifled choke will help with slug accuracy in a smoothbore.

Only if it's threaded for screw-in chokes....:D

I just read an article in a magazine where they compared different brands of slugs. They tried sabot slugs in rifled barrels and rifled slugs in smooth barrels. I don't remember which brand was best, but I do remember that there wasn't a whole lot of difference between the sabots and the rifled slugs in terms of groupings. I want to say that they all hovered around 4" groups @ 100 yds. That wasn't the point of the article, but I thought it was interesting. If interested, I can get the details.

Since your shotgun is smooth bored, you would obtain better accuracy using Foster type slugs (Rifled Slugs). Also use improved cylinder choke for accuracy or buy a barrel that is made for slugs.

FYI......the term "rifled slugs" is/was all about marketing. The "rifling" on the Foster type slugs actually does very little if nothing at all to impart any spin on the "punkin' balls". It was/is put there to entice hunters to purchase them thinking they would be more acurate. There is actually no more accuracy in the "rifled slugs" vs. a smooth slug of the same diameter and construction. A shotgun with a smoothbore barrel is essentially a modern musket with slugs.

As far as sabot slugs in a smoothbore.....I have shot them in a smoothbore and saw little difference in them as compared to a standard Foster type slug as far as accuracy is concerned. However, I have shot them in the rifled barrels and was somewhat impressed at their accuracy.

As far as your original question.....yes, it is OK to shoot them in your shotgun. The choke doesn't matter, full, mod., I/C or cyl. bore. And contrary to popular belief, you WILL NOT hurt a full choke by shooting slugs through it. The lead is much softer than the steel, therefore, it'll just mash the slug a little more and will sometimes be a little less accurate than say an I/C or cyl. bore gun.

Hope this helps ya!
