Have any of you guys tried the cultivators that hook to your atv? What about the harrows? What do you use to work up the ground for your plots when all you have is an atv?

I've got a single 10" plow and a 4" wide 2 gang disk. They are really just toys. I have used them for setting seed after planting, but they are slow and not near as efficient as I had hope.

I've taken a an pull type disk and used just the front gang and it works a little better. Takes a good ATV to pull it, and you have to put some weigth on it to get it to cut.

For small plots a rptotiller mounted on an ATV might be best. But without a PTO, that means it has to have a motor.

If you look around, you can buy an old tractor that still has some good working life and equipment for $3000 to $4000 or so. You'll be ahead in the long run.

Strutter, I bought a thing called a "Weekend Warrior" to pull behind my atv. It's basically a chisel plow, hooked to a sprocket thing so you can raise/lower it. It never worked very well, it simply wasn't heavy enough to break the ground. One time I actually stood on it to get it down in the ground. When I started pulling it, it did good for a few feet, then broke in half. So, I got a turning plow meant to be used with a garden tractor, and rigged it up to work on the Weekend Warrior frame. It does ok, but its still slow.

I've also got an old team disc that I pull. It's ok, but again, it takes forever to disc much ground, and it takes several passes to do anything. I just about have to burn the dead grass to get the disc to cut.

Bottom line, I agree with Multi, if I had to do it over again, I would have bought an old tractor.

Same problem I'm runnng into, Only theres no way I can buy a tractor!
It really looks like even if I had a tractor; Access would be an issue.
I honestly think me & a few guys with a long day, plenty of beer and a few roto-tillers are the answer.....

Might bribe a local farmer to help out? Hard to catch them when it's prime planting time though.

I'm going to try and catch the guy that farms our area, I'm hoping he'll be gracious enough to leave a few 10 or 12 yard "strips" near the fields for some high protein foods that we can plant!!!!

It would be nice too, if he'd leave a little standing corn too! Wishfull thinking I'm sure[:)]

You might have luck and get him to drill in some cow peas. The edges don't do much for corn or beans anyway.
