SCI Lauds Passing ESA Reform Bill

TUCSON, Ariz. , Oct. 18, 2005 – SCI today praised the U.S. House of Representatives for the passage of bill HR 3824, the Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act of 2005, by a definitive and historic 229-193 vote crucial to the much-needed reform of the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

“By such a decisive vote, the House has shown that it understands how imperative it is to fix the fundamental problems associated with ESA,” said SCI Executive Director Tom Riley. “It is a vote for both future of wildlife, and for the authority of states to effectively manage the wildlife within their borders.”

Sponsored by House Resource Chairman Rep. Richard Pombo (R-California), HR 3824 seeks to fix long-standing problems with ESA by focusing on species recovery. Changes also will include providing incentives to states, counties and local land owners to do their part in the overall conservation effort.

HR 3824 will now begin its journey in the U.S. Senate, which has begun to craft companion legislation. Also, Environment and Public Works Chairman, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), has called for action on the proposed legislation to be introduced later this year.

Riley added, “Sen. Inhofe is demonstrating his leadership as chairman by taking the initiative in managing the huge job of ESA reform. I urge the Senate to join the House in helping make ESA reform a reality, and I encourage sportsmen and other conservation-minded people to thank their representatives in the House for passing HR 3824.”
