When I was a young boy Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts were about the only thing a kid could get in to as far as an organization was concerned. When you were in public on an official function you were in full uniform. 4H was considered only for the guys/gals that lived in the county.
Things have certainly changed.
No longer are you required to be in full uniform in scouting, I believe they are still out there just not as visible. Also, 4H is just not for the county kids, with their shooting sports program and small animal projects, photography and other projects, a city kid can get along just fine in 4H.
And then there is the sports thing. I played baseball when I was kid.
We started in June ended in July and played the rest of the summer as a kid. We now have a summer league and a fall league. Soccer is just about to take over as the most played sport in this county and then comes basketball.
Maybe kids don't have time for the scouts or 4H, they are trying to hard to become athletes.

I am an Eagle Scout and I to can say that I have seen a huge decline in scouting. I have to say that the organization is a great one, I to can say that while I was in scouts I noticed that many kids was having to choose between scouts and other after school activities. It is also a shame that many younger kids think that it is a disgrace to wear a boyscout uniform. They are a fraid the other kids are going to make fun of them. My opinion is that they sould try to get the other kids involved in Scouting. They might take a intrest in it. And after all scouts these days are not just out camping but they are learning about new technology and other aspects of scouting that make a person a well rounded individual.

Let me give you some good news. Scouting is very much alive and well. I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with our local troop and have one son who is a boy scout and another in cub scouts. We had our District banquet weekend before last for the Lake Cumberland District and had earned "Honor District" which reflects a healthy growth among other things. Our troop probably averages 30 days of camping and outdoor activities per year involving a wide variety of subjects including of course, archery, rifle shooting and shotgun shooting which are still very much a part of the merit badge program as is camping, swimming, hiking....120 different badges in all.
You have to go no farther than this computer screen to see how alive the organization is. Just put in a search for Boy Scouts and look at all the different sites that come up. You can check in with the council nearest you, which can easily be found via internet, and locate a pack or troop in your vicinity.
To get ideas on how bowhunting clubs and scout groups can form partnerships check out the story I have written for the next issue of Kentucky Bowhunter, the official magazine of the United Bowhunters of Kentucky.
If you cannot get information from any of the sources mentioned above, drop me an email and I will be glad to help.
