I got my clover seed out the middle of last month. I never got around to spreading any lime last fall so I guess I am going to use the pelitized since it works quicker. What I need to know is when should I put it out and how long will it last. I plan on putting reg lime out as soon as it dries up but I need some on it as it begins to grow right?

Lewis...you should put it on as soon as you can. I think the correct amount is 1/2 of the amount of ag lime your soil test calls for, 6 to 6.5 Ph is great. It should last long enough for the ag lime to start taking effect, 6 months or so.
Good luck with the clover

Another question. Will the pelitized lime work ok if I just spread it on top of the ground and let the rain soak it in?

absolutely

With most Ky soil tests calling for near two tons per acre of lime that's a lot of bags to carry.

And expensive! Southern States has it in bulk for $96/ton and they have ground driven buggys if no tractor is available. If it were me, I would just wait and put the ag lime on whenever I could and overseed if necessary next winter.

I bought 400lbs of pelitized lime and 100lbs of 6-24-24 fert and spread it saturday. It was quite a bit to spread with my little hand spreader but it will be worth it this summer if the clover does good. I know I probably need alot more than 400lbs of lime but I figure that is better than none at all. I'm going to spread some more this summer. I can't wait to see the results.

If your plots are big enough for a truck to turn around in, then you can have the Co-op spread it with the Fert/Lime truck. Last year I had 14 tons dilivered and spread on 3 plots for $95. That's ag lime from the quarry.

If your close to Caneyville, Ky. the co-op there is a lot cheaper than SS. They sell pel. lime for about $75 a ton. Yon can get your fert. mixed with it and apply all at one time. They have a buggey for you to use.

Also, I have a 300lb spreader for the back of my tractor that works great. Most farmers have one and might spread the stuff for you.

Buying bulk will really save you a lot of money. Bag fertilizer usually has inert material mixed in that does nothing for you. If you buy a ton of say triple 10, you'll not get a ton dry weight. You get probably around 1200 or 1300 lbs or so, but you get the equivilent of a ton. It's pure chemical, with no inert material. A ton of say triple 20 will only be a bit over $100, many times cheaper than 40 bags of the same stuff.

Lime costs about $10/ton here. I need about 100 tons put on my place. I had 105 tons of gravel spread Saturday. It never ends!!!!
