I hadn't noticed lately, but, did you know that a dang trappin' license cost a youngster $17.50!! Has Ky F&W done this intentionally to discourage kids from trapping and put an end to the Trapping Tradition in Kentucky?? Why??
I knew we had to fight the anti-s, but ,I didn't realize we had to fight our own F&W , also!!
We have youth hunting license for $6 or $7, no fishing license till your 16 , and a kids has to pay $17.50 to catch a few 'rats after school!! A young kid with "dozen #1 Victors slung over his shoalders" and a pair of hip waders will sure learn a lot about the outdoors, that will last a Life time and make a little spendin' money to.
DAMM IT AIN'T RIGHT!

I agree....I think the Dept. should set a trend and sell a youth, all game sportsman license for those under 16 for a $1.00 Let them make it up somewhere else.

Why is trapping, in general, different? You could hunt and fish on your own farm without a licence, but you need a $10 landowner permit to trap on it? I'm sure the KDFWR has a reason, but is it justifiable?

MuskratD,
Did you know you can shoot a raccoon, muskrat, fox, etc on your property without a hunting license.
But you have to have a trapping license just to set a "Box Trap" for a dang rabbit, even on your own property!!

I hear ya buddy, but I have to wonder why the KDFWR needs to make us buy those permits. What is so special about catchin' some critters on your own land?

Multi, I think you've hit on something with the youth sportsmen's license. We need to take that discussion a little further.
Regarding the $17.50 for youth trapping...that issue also ought to be taken up with KDFWR. There can't be over a handful of those issued each year so a reduction to $5.00 wouldn't amount to a hill of beans in lost revenues.

Let's go one step further -- how about a "family" license? Think about the financial strain on families with several children who want to hunt. If Sam's Club can do it, so can we. The clerk enters the number of kids into the magical license printing machine and out pops a card for everyone! There could still be a nominal fee and each could count as a single license so Fed funds wouldn't be diminished. As far as trapping goes, charging a kid $17.50 is ridiculous. If anything, we should set up a program to incourage kids to trap -- every kid enrolled would get a starter kit of some sort (trapping tips, trap tags, maybe even a trap) and enrollees could be paid a small bounty for targeted species in addition to being able to sell the pelts. This would get more kids started in what Valley thinks is an appropriate outdoor education program and help control some of the notorious quail and turkey egg eaters. I bet you could even get support from fur-buyers and equipment manufacturers.
BTW, I had my 2.5 yr old granddaughter with me when I bought my turkey tag this spring. She insisted that she receive a license too, so the guy printed out a blank for her. She keeps it in my desk drawer at the office and refers to it as "her" turkey tag. I think youngsters need some sort of tag that identifies them as a "official" hunter or fisherman just like mom or dad or whomever -- even if it's free.
Just some thoughts. . . .

Should be able to get financial support from groups like NWTF, DU,Delta,QU for future predator control.[:)]
