Can I use my 870 to shoot slugs and if so what choke would I use. What would be my effective range? Also if I used a single shot how would it need to be choked ? And 1 more can I use a 410 if not what sizes can I use? Thanks Jeff

First, I strongly advise NOT to choose a .410 slug for Deer. It is simply not powerful enough, and you need to consider a 12, 16 or 20 gauge slugs. As to choke selection, choose "Open Bore" or Improved Cylinder. You can but a fully rifled barrel for your 870, which is the best route.

im with hoosier on this one, the improved cylinder choke for the standard vent ribed barrel. i know when i used my 11-87 with slugs i had the best grouping at 75 yards using federal (i think) slugs. you can also get a rifled choke and shoot sabots or just get a fully rifled barrel. I have an 870 super mag and i use a 21" rifled barrel and i can group 3 at about 3" at 100 yards ( that as far as the range goes out to i shoot). good luck in whatever you choose and try different slugs to see what shoots best with your gun.

MRDUKS,
Most Model 870 improved cylinder barrels will shoot a slug pretty well.
Would highly recommend slug barrel with iron sights or scope it for much improved accuracy. There are many small caliber and gauges weapons that are legal to deer hunt with in Kentucky .410 gauge shotguns are legal in Kentucky, however, distance is more limited and shot placement more critical than larger gauges. A friend in Pa., has taken many deer and even a bear with his Mossberg 410 bolt action.
Read about, in Ohio, a few years back a young boy took a monster, 275 lb buck with a 410 single barrel.

Assuming that your barrel has screw in chokes, Remington makes a rifled choke that works very well. ?Use it with most any sabot slug, lightfields, buckhammer or brenekee slug and it'll do fine.
