We want to do a little planting for doves on the farm and I would like to know what would be best for these birds and our climate.

I have been planting dove fields for 6 years now.Annual sunflowers work great to attract doves,if you can keep the deer out of them!!I haven't had much luck. The deer seem to love sunflower more than anything.I finally gave up on them.Milo works pretty good if the seed matures in time, but the small songbirds eat the seed up as soon as it matures, same with sunflower.I've planted browntop and white proso millet and had pretty good luck.Nothing else seems to care much for it,but I wasn't to happy with the seed production. The last couple of years I've went with german foxtail millet.I used the golden variety.I believe this stuff is the best if the deer are going to get in to it.It's full of seed and deer don't care for it.It gets about 2 to 3 feet tall and it's to flimsy for the small birds to perch on,so they can only eat what falls on the ground. You have plenty of seed left come Sept 1st.

Thank you all for the information and we have to get our minds made up as planting will soon be getting underway.
