i have an older compaq presario and my brother needs to use it for school, it will turn on but nothing will load, soon as you turn it on the monitor goes to sleep mode and the modem just runs, anybody no what could be wrong or a way to fix it

Do you hear any beeps?

Does it load past the BIOS screen? Do you see the POST screen at any time during the logon process? Does your OS (windows, linux) appear to be loading at any time? As turtleky said do you hear any beeps? You can diagnose hardware problems by the number and sequence of beeps.

as long as you are sure you don't need anything on it. Try formatting the hard drive and reinstall windows. If you need more help and you are around the bowling green area bring it over sometime.

screen goes to black, and no beeps, sounds like just a fan going and the light on the disc drive keeps blinking, how would i re format it, if i cant see anything on the screen,( screen works, hooked it up to another comp and it worked fine).

as soon as you push the power button start hitting F12 it should come up in a boot menu then you can go from there

k i will give it a try, probably just gana have the thing rebuilt, but tips like that help cuase i will try anything b4 forkin out that kind of cash to get it fixed

Might have a bad processor..My brother had the same problem, when he would turn his on he got nothing but a black screen...He replaced the processor and now it works fine...Just a suggestion...So, try what you can before going and spending any money on a processor....Just my opinion.

your probly right deerhunter thats what a pro comp tech told me, but he got a new comp any way thanks for all the help
