Driving from Providence to Princeton tonight, I see this furball in the road so I drive around it, but I thought I saw an ear move. I drive back and realize that it's a fawn, seemingly asleep and alive in the middle of the road. So I turn around again and get next to it and turn my flashers on. Right at that moment an 18-wheeler comes around the curve which would have killed it for sure had I not been there. But anyway, it had been hit. There wasn't much blood, but there was a little coming out it's nose, but none out of its mouth, so it may not be a lung injury. I couldn't see any other cuts. There was a bald spot on the top of its head the size of a quarter. We moved it out of the road and it finally held its head up but wouldn't open its eyes, but finally did for a few seconds. It acted severely drunk more than anything. I happened to have my hunting knife with me but I didn't know for sure that there wasn't any help, there's a good chance that it just had a concussion. I hit two birds with my jeep at a game reserve the other day, knocked both of them silly, one was so bad that it was nearly motionless on its back and starting to breathe slower and slower, but they finally flew off after 5 or 10 minutes so it obviously crossed my mind that this was something similar. I didn't call the game warden because I knew he'd either ignore the call or go shoot it. But at the same time I don't want it suffering, so if somebody lives in the area, please check on it, it's nearly right across the road from mile marker 16 on what I think is 283, the road from Princeton to Providence, it's on the side of the road going towards Princeton, it may be 10 yards or so more towards Providence. At the least it's got a rough night ahead of it, and I hope it's old enough to eat on its own even if it does make it.
