How do you know when a pear is ready to be picked? My hunting buddy told me they use to pick them off of the tree, not from the ground, wrap them in paper, seperate about an inch apart in a box & store in the basement. He said by christmas they would be ripe to eat. He didn't know exactly when they'd pick them. Have you heard of this? I've been told that the tree I've got is an old fall pear tree. I'd say this would make some good winter deer food attractant. ( along with the other critters - no doubt).

trust me

I've pulled pears off of trees around old homesteads in December and they were delicious. The skin may turn brown, but they were good. Some pears aren't fit for consumption, only make good slingshot ammo. I don't know one from the other, but I'll always give them a looksee when I encounter them. Also, I've seen deer eat them off the ground, so it probably would be a good late season food source.
