Indiana lawmakers are considering a $5 bounty on coyotes, hoping an old-fashioned remedy will help curb the animal's appetite for pets and livestock throughout the state.

A bill being considered by an Indiana House committee would make Indiana the sixth state with a law allowing coyote bounties, according to the California-based Animal Protection Institute (API), a nonprofit animal advocacy group. The others are Colorado, South Dakota, Virginia, Utah and Texas.

Democratic Rep. Dale Grubb's bill would allow the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to put the bounty into effect in problem areas. State wildlife officials and animal protection advocates, however, aren't convinced that bounties are the answer to Indiana's coyote problems. The API argues bounties don't work, and that coyotes are important players in wildlife balance.

The Indiana DNR also opposes coyote bounties. The state has a long history with bounty systems that ended in 1970, but the DNR says they've never been shown to control predator populations or improve game populations.

Indiana doesn't keep a count of its coyote population and the DNR says the animals aren't responsible for any serious damage.

I wish that there was one here in KY. That would give me one more reason to tell my wife why I should hunt.....added income! [;)]

Damn Rocco,

You're taking the wife to Cancun for your anniversary. I would have thought that you would have more hunting "tokens" saved up from that than you can spend.[:D] Enjoy!
