Just seen in the local paper the state now requires any trailer that is pulled behind a vehicle with the standard 6000 lb pickup plates or any higher weight plate to be licenced. I understand boat trailers are exempt but not the ones most guys haul thier atv's on. This new regulation by the artical went into effect July 1. No notice sent out or at least I didn't recieve one. The wife even went in an paid the property taxes on both my boat and utility trailer in July and the clerk didn't mention the need to purchase a plate at that time.

Anyone else know anything about this ?

I don't know the most recent revisions but if they did change that, then they need to update their website:

There has long been rumors about this, I've heard them all. Maybe they did change it, I'm not sure. Every other state requires licenses, not sure why Kentucky hasn't for so long. If you are using the trailer for business purposes, I can guarantee that you have to register it and have a plate on it. Otherwise I believe that it's been voluntary, you can register if you want to but it had not been required.

What sucks is that since Kentucky didn't require plates, they viewed trailers as any other merchandise, you charge 6% sales tax when one is sold, then that's the end of it. However, every other state views them in the same regards as a motor vehicle, requiring plates. So basically what would happen is that people would come here from out of state and buy a trailer, and be forced to pay Kentucky sales tax because it was general merchandise and they were in our borders, then when they got back home, since every other state also required plates and therefore allowed out of state tax credits, usually their home state would want to charge sales tax as well. I would have to call another state's DMV or registration office at a local courthouse and explain that they should have to give the customer credit for the Kentucky sales tax. If somebody from out of state buys a car here, it's a piece of cake, no problems, but Kentucky has been a PITA in regards to trailer registration and tax. Well actually I should say that they have handled it very simple-like, but it's a huge PITA because it's totally different than everywhere else. Kentucky doesn't even allow temporary tags to be used, yet Ohio requires plates if an Ohio resident is on the road with a trailer hitched up. How messed up is that? You almost have to smuggle them in.

My wifes mother is the county clerk up here and she has said nothing about this. We have 3 different trailers on the place an 6 foot, 10 foot, and a gooseneck and we do not have tags on any of them. The gooseneck would not matter because we pull it with the truck that has farm tags on it, but the other two we haul atv,s and anything else but my truck does not have farm tags on it and she has never said anything about this. I wiil check it out.
