Was just curious as to if there were any hop-heads here. If your favorite beer is Budweiser or something similar, you don't count. :D It's my dream to own a microbrewery. I just got back from the Bluegrass and Beer festival in Keystone Colorado, that was pretty cool. Now I just need a couple mil and I can build my own brewpub like it should be done. If anybody wins the lottery, holler at me. ;)

But, to keep things interesting... what's your favorite beer? Mine... well I can't pick just one:

1. A vanilla black and tan from Black Horse Brewery in Clarksville.

2. Berghoff Bock.

3. Peak One Porter from Backwoods Brewery, Frisco CO

4. Goose Island Christmas Ale

5. St. Pauli Girl dark

My husand's cousin knows someone who's hobby is making beer. Don't know how he does it, (I guess with one of those kits from a retail store). But, supposedly he makes great beer! Even said he made chocolate beer. YUCK!
Also said it causes a lot of problems with his wife though. Go for it!!!!!!

You're missing out! Even if you only stick with simple styles of beer, there's better stuff out there. Most people shy away first of all because the mass producers of beer have deep pockets for advertising so people are brainwashed, but secondly because of the cost. Many times it just doesn't cost that much more. For example, most of the cheaper 6-packs at Wal-Mart are $4.74, yet I can go to the local specialty beer store and buy Berghoff Bock for $5.00.

who drinks Bud light or Coors light

I drink those too but that don't mean they taste better! It's a well known fact that mass produced beer like this only tastes good when it's really cold - it limits your pallette and most any beer can taste good like that.

when I get to feeling sosphisticated I will drink a Bud select

Ah, the marketing ploy of the century. Take an empty beer such as Mich Ultra then load up up with more hops than usual, and all of a sudden it's a premium beer. :D

A buddy in Tenn sent me some home brew, swore I'd never touch a Bud after drinking his product. I iced it down, got a bag of pork skins, and tried it out. That nasty stuff ruined the whole bag of snacks for me. I turned the light off, so I couldn't see the stuff floating on top, and that didn't make it taste any better. It's what I would imagine horse piss to taste like. You couldn't get drunk on that stuff cause you'd get too sick to drink enough.

Anyway, I swore it all off shortly after that.

I've tried a few hundred different micro brews and liked alot of them, and hated some too. I also spent 2 years in germany where I tried beer from all over Europe. My favorite is the Heineken available over there. I don't know why, but it is WAY BETTER than the import we have here. Overthere it comes in a brown glass bottle and everyone refers to it as Red Star. I drunk thousands of em while there! I even spent 2 hours in the brewery in Amsterdam hammering as many as possible for the grand total of $2!!!!!!!!! Best $2 I ever spent. Nothing like it! I've also completed 2 world tours at Old Chicago(if you've never been and you like beer you need to try and find one). They have 110 beers on menu at any one time and they periodically change them up. I've also completed about 10 mini tours. The world tour includes one of everything on the menu and the minis usually fall on holidays and include seasonal beers. Needless to say I should have stock in the place! I've paid as much as $11 for one stinkin ass beer! It sucked too! I even tried one once that's called Yellow Snow. I've still got the bottle some where. Taste alot like the name! There were several to die for, and I usually started out the evening with one of my favorites. It's been about 4 years, but I've pretty much given up beer, and for the life of me I can't remember what the name of my favorite was. It was a lager made in Colorado, but it slips my mind. I still drink one occasionally, and have taken a liking to Amber Bock, and Bud Select. Ofcourse they aren't like some of the better european beers, but they do in a pinch!

Sounds cool. :) I'm not too big on imports, I like a few, but I mostly just like microbreweries. German wheat beer, hefeweizen's, I hate those things, way too much yeast. Most people think I'm a drunk when I talk about this stuff but I'm not really. Usually I just have one or two for two or three times a week. Three in one night is alot and four is getting pretty crazy. :) I try to never drink anything at all two days in a row and not more than 3 days in a week, and if I ever do feel drunk I don't drink anything for a week or two. I love beer, but I'd like to still have a liver when I hit 40. But, yeah, that's the good stuff, I can drink 5 or 6 Coors or whatever and I just have to wizz alot and it makes me pissed that I don't have a buzz already.

I pretty much have tried everything. I went through that stage in college where one feels like they MUST either drink Natural light or an expensive import or micro-brew.. To hell with all that....... Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of imports that I could live off of, but it's just not worth the extra money.

Just give me a Coors Light or Miller Lite and I'm straight.

The best beer in the world is Chimay Blue. It's a Belgium beer and was ranked as the #1 beer world wide by numerous publications. I personally love it and have been to the brewery. There are 3 types of Chimay though so make sure and get the Blue. The only place I know of to get it at the store is at Liquor world on Richmond Road in Lexington! You can also get it at Marikas in Lexington. The brewery however (if you wanna visit) is in Belgium but well worth the trip! I personally do not have a single favorite beer though, I have lots of favorites. Here are a few; Carlsberg, Corsendonk, Kronenburg, Jupiler (can not get it here if you find jupiler here let me know) and Leffe.

Beer history/trivia off the top of my head that alot of people don't know:

The nun in the Canterbury Tales owned a brewery.

Thomas Jefferson was a home brewer.

George Washington was one of the biggest stout/dark beer fans that ever lived.

One of Benjamin Franklin's famous quotes was "Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants to see us happy." (I have this on a T-shirt!)

The pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock because they ran out of ale.

Sam Adams didn't want to be in the brewing business. His family was all about brewing, but he wanted to do the patriotic government thing and didn't want anything to do with beer. His name is used because obviously he is the most well known of the family.

The great depression ended because of beer. Adolphus Busch wrote an open letter to the president explaining that legalizing beer would instantly create 1 million American jobs. Apparently some people agreed, and when it was legalized, a Budweiser horse and carriage brought the first shipment to the White House, a symbol that is still alive today, but most people have no idea why.

Swag that is handed out at meetings, conferences, races, and nearly every other event in today's world was pioneered by Adolphus Busch to advertise beer.

Corona is actually a very nasty beer even though many people consider it premium due to marketing. The bottle is clear because it's cheaper. When light goes through the clear bottle and hits the beer, it produces free radicals in the massive quantity of just a few parts per billion, just enough to have a nice skunkiness to it. Corona's solution? Just mask the bad taste with a lime, it'll be alright. So, Corona was transformed from this nasty skunky beer to this tropical exotic premium beer with no changes except for marketing.

Corona GOOD! I think I heard that Germans introduced beer making to the Mexicans, so actually a lot of Mexican beer is brewed like German beer. Makes sense because most Mexican beer is very tasty and much more like true beer than American beers.. To me, if the "skunk" flavor is what you're after, Bud Light is pure skunk ass.

That's funny, because Budweiser is straight from Bohemia! Adolphus Busch was a German immigrant. Budweiser was named for the Bohemian town of Budiwoyz, which was later known as Bömische Budweis and also later as Ceske Budejovice. "Budweiser" started off not being a brand, but literally meaning "of" or "from" Budweis, and has been known as "the beer of kings" (sound familiar?) since the 1600's. Several other breweries made Budweisers but Americans only associated it with Anheuser-Busch.

True, but Budweiser lost it's heritage along the way. It taste and looks NOTHING like a fine German beer.. I have met people from all over the world and I'm always curious to know what beer is big where they live. I always ask them if the like American beer and usually they laugh.. Either way, when it comes down to it, all big domestic beers are crap in the big picture. They are just weak, watered down versions of what a beer is suppost to be. Not to say that I havn't developed a liking for them but Budweiser is no better than Coors, Miller, or Corona:D .

Yep, Art is absolutely correct. We all know about the many historical ties linking Germany to Mexico. In fact, Emperor Wilhelm II sent over many of his master brewers to pass along Germany's brewing secrets to their favorite former colony (hmmm???). I learned all about it in Mexico City during the famous, weeklong Mexican holiday, Cinco de Oktoberfiesta.

For my money, I think the Aussies and Kiwis make the best beers.

Well after 3 liquor store jobs through out my college career..I have tasted just about everything. I like nothing more than a good ol wheat stout. I am talking about the kind one can bake a loaf a bread with the sludge in the bottom. I will consume anything, less than hamms or strohs. If I am not drinking my favorites..I will always settle for a "cheap" beer. There are a lot of cheap beer out there that have great, full flavors.

KYCOWBOY..it was a Sam Adams Tripple bock...not new and they quit making it I believe...in blue 10oz bottles..yes it was over $100...was it good, ahh...overkill on the syrup, but allright. Yes it was 12%..every bit of it.

One wants to get into some excellant beers...go micro with no preservative. I still drink my old mil..., beast..and from around my stomping grounds "sterling", course sterling is made in Pennsylvania now, but still good. Man...time to grab a high life!

I love a cold Moosehead. Probably my favorite.
My wife gets the beer and always buys Busch Light which I handle because it's there.
I recently found a beer called Rouge that's brewed in Oregon and comes in a big brown 24oz. (I think) bottle with an American flag on it. $1.99 a bottle and well worth it. I've been buying a couple everytime I go to Bowling Green.
You all that live in wet cities/counties, count your beer drinking blessings. We drive 30 miles one way to stock the fridge. Or I can hit the local bootlegger if I want to try and choke down a Miller beer. YUCK

Ahh what a topic.

I had a Boddingtons (from England) down at the beerSeller in Nashvegas and it was a mighty tasty brew. I've heard some good ones thus far. I always have my dad bring some Lienenkugals down with him when he visits. Moosehead, Labats Blue, Bass, Samuel Adams, Grain Belt Amber all good brews, but for a Hunting Trip nothing tops Schells Deer Brand

after 15 or 16 does the taste really matter????natural light is my favorite cheap and if you drink enough you will get where you want to be, If you drink them and your not getting where you want to be find a funnel!!!!!!!!You got that right! While stationed in Germany about 15 miles form the Bitburger Brewery I tried to deveope a taste for Bitburger(it was by far the most popular with the drunken airmen!). I've never tasted piss, but i've smelled it, and that brewery smelled like piss and the beer tasted like what I think piss would taste like! But, a night on the town meant I had to bear that crap! I'd get wated before the club, so I could stand the bitburger once I got there! When you asked for a beer, Bitburger is what you got! After 6 or 12 heinekens, the Bitburger went down just fine. Never did develope a sober taste for the crap! I have seen it many times now in the states, anyone ever try it? Not sure if the import is as aweful as the stuff in germany, if so I can't imagine it's very popular!

corndogggy
08-19-2005, 09:06 AM
Yeah Bitburger is who makes the European Budweiser, even if you specifically ask for a Bud, you get a Bitburger. :)

I saw the Beer Sellar mentioned, that's a cool place. They have one on tap called Purple Haze that's a raspberry wheat ale, I made the mistake of going on 2 for 1 night and they gave me 2 of them, and obviously I couldn't waste a perfectly good beer, but dang that stuff is nasty.

But as for Nashville, my favorite is Big River Brewery. They are the ones who got me hooked on microbreweries. It's a clean place with nice pool tables, not your typical skanked out bar. They have a "thick brick" red that's really rich. They seem to be very proud of their brews and their fermenting tanks look really majestic.

I went to Big River like 8 or 10 times, but then I started visiting every microbrewery possible. Any time I travel, I have to go to a microbrewery in that town and bring home a pint glass, I've got two shelves full of them. :) My top 10 brewery list:

1. Backwoods Brewery, Frisco CO
2. Smoky Mountain Brewery, Gatlinburg TN
3. Black Horse Brewery, Clarksville TN
4. Big River Brewery, Nashville TN
5. Rock Bottom, Chicago IL
6. Rock Bottom, Indianapolis IN
7. Blackstone Brewery, Nashville TN
8. Bluegrass Brewing Company, Louisville KY
9. Market Street Brewery, Nashville TN
10. San Francisco Brewing Company, San Francisco CA

When I was in Colorado, I went to the Backcountry Brewery in Frisco and I got a sample of their seasonal beer. It had a funny name so I asked about it. He waiter said that they add a 100 pound bag of sugar to the wort, but he was just repeating crap, he had no idea what it meant. Man that stuff was like beer with vodka in it, 9.9%! The interesting part is that to get past like 6% or 7% alcohol, you have to directly add sugar like that, because the yeast cells basically get drunk and cannot produce any more, you have to give them a kick in the tail for them to produce anymore.
