In the Jefferson Co. public school system, there are 4,000 kids that can't speak English. They have interpreters from Bosnia, Mexico, and wh knows where else. What's wrong with this picture??

I agree they should make them speak english I also think we should close all of our borders and make it harder for the worthless border jumpers to get in the country and anyone from this country helping them should get the death penelty just my thoughts on this

I personally (and express personally) have ups and down views of it all. We need to remember that this nation is the "Melting pot." I am mostly of german decent having tracked my relatives back ten generations. I also think that If you come from another country as a child and attend schools here, then it should be mandatory that you take an english speaking class. will not only keep costs down for school systems, it will also help that individual later in life. Just my two pennies worth. ;)

yes but when your family and my family came over here it was to better themselves and the first thing they did was learn to speak english, and they did not come here to get welfare, food stamps and doctor's care which is what happens today

I agree to a point. While it does irritate me that when I visit the ATM, that I have to choose English or Spanish, I do understand. Our country welcomes people who wish to better themselves. So, I am really torn on it. Some days I am more irritated than others. Just hard to swallow sometimes.
I love our great country, but sometimes I feel we do more for others than our own people. Step over the poor to give a hand out to another country, but that is what makes america great in others eyes...its generosity.
Someone once asked said this to me, maybe the Navaho, Cherokee and other American Indians have a problem with us not speaking some form of the true native language of this continent.

How many people have lost job's to someone that is bi-lingual. Sorto sucks that someone that isn't as qualified as you get a job just because they can speak Spanish in America.
Call me crazy, but I just think it's pretty damn crude to feel so bent out of shape because a child has not yet learned English... The key word there is "kids". I mean damn, we're talking about kids who are trying atleast.... I seriously doubt these kids had much say in the events that put them in school in America and are probably doing the best they can.. Rather than wasting time complaining about these kids, why not throw a fit over our OWN citizen kids who don't even go to school?
Learning a second language doesn't happen overnight, and these kids probably have not mastered their own language yet at their age.
Living in Lexington, I went to school with many Chinese and Japanese kids who had come here with their parents who were at Toyota or UK. These were typically great people and performed better than most in school despite NOT speaking the language....yet. I think I would have been pretty pissed if some man came in a went off on them because they couldn't speak english..
I guess this is just one of those things that i don't think is worth getting my underwear in a wad over since it has little or no effect on my life anymore than other things that don't involve me... I don't think anyone here is such a great person that they can afford to worry about stuff like this without addressing their own problems first..

Kid's is one thing, I'm not going to get pissed at a foreign kid, they can't help it. However, this situation in college sucks. I paid good money and went into debt for years upon years for a good education, so I get kind of ticked when good classroom time is wasted just because somebody doesn't understand English. One time in an electrical engineering class we actually wasted 45 minutes of a 50 minute class because a Korean guy didn't speak English well enough to completely understand the question, and naturally, he had to be a sniper in the Korean army so he thought he was a badass and could intimidate everybody including the professor, so a big debate surfaced... I mean, I really didn't appreciate having to put up with 4 or 5 years of BS like that. Learn English, problem solved.
As for the comments about immigrants, for what it's worth, I know somebody that is living with a Mexican immigrant, and surprisingly enough, it's not our government that is trying to do everything possible to keep them out, it's Mexico's. Something like half of the people down there want to come here. Their economy would blow up and their country would fall apart if they let everybody freely go. As long as they're law abiding citizens, it really doesn't bother me until they start to take our jobs.

I Have No Problem With People Coming Here To Adapt To Our Way Of Living, our Culture, Our Language.i Do Hate The Fact I Had To Take A Foriegn Language Class For Two Years To Graduate High School.i Do Hate The Fact That I Might Not Get A Job Because Someone Has A Minority Quota They Have To Make.i Do Hate The Fact That I Am Not 100% Native American So I Could Tell All Of You To Go Back To Sorry A#$ Country You Came From. But I Guess That Is Just The Irish Coming Out In Me!!!!!

I agree wholely with what your opinions on getting the border under control (minus the whole death penalty thing:) ) but your response above is contradicting? Why do you think these people are coming over? to make their lives worse? Maybe welfare, food stamps and doctor's care is 100% better than what they are leaving, and can you really blame a parent who is trying to better their childrens lives?
Just playing devils advocate here, personally I agree that our borders need to be closed (terrorism issues) and I believe that all immigrants should be REQUIRED to learn english as a second language, regardless of age.

Some guy called in to Rush tues. complaining that they only had one Level1 trauma haspitol left, I think out of thirteen. They've all closed due to giving so much free medical assistance to illegals. Just thought I'd share that one with ya
and one other thing, I called my credit card co. with a billing ? and got "press 1 for english 2 for espanol" of course I pushed 1 and still got someone who could barely speak the language, I couldnt understand a word they were saying and hung up. Maybe I should get me one of those phone answering jobs, I think people can understand "hick" better!:D
A free society is not perfect and never will be.. I see only two choices, adapt and move on or waste all our time by complaining and get left in the dust.
