Football season is upon us again and I thought maybe we would get a better understanding of where we are from by where we went to HS. I graduated from St. Xavier, class of 1988. How about you?

Sorry, I didn't post my graduation was in 1973, and yes it more than one room back then. However , I did attend 5th grade that was still held in a one room school house with a pot belly stove and we carried the coal and wood in each morning. THOSE WERE THE DAYS

No it was 6 miles to the school, we caught the bus about 7am each morning and our teacher was usually there with a fire started on the coldest mornings, I remember being out of school due to heavy snow from Thanksgiving vacation til after Christmas break. It was much different then but I value those days and the learning experience of those teachers.

South Marshall High, class of 1974. Home of the "Rebels."

Can you imagine having a Johnny Reb mascott, waving the Stars and Bars, and singing Dixie at a ballgame these days?

Being a product of the baby boomer generation was an educational experience. We had "split" grades until high school, never went to a school with air conditioning until college, had to share old, tattered books in lower grades, didn't have enough kids to field a football team, could still get permission to leave school early to plow, carried knife in pocket every day, often had gun in truck in parking lot, had a smoking area for underclassmen and a separate smoking area for seniors, every time someone opened the door to the teacher's lounge it looked like the building was on fire, we couldn't wear flared-leg pants, no facial hair (girls or boys), no hair touching ears or collars, basketball players wore Converse All-Stars, and the Board of Education was applied liberally to the backside to mitigate transgressions.

Nowadays, we would be shut down by a bunch of state education bureaucrats who wouldn't know "good education" if it bit them on the butt.

Not anymore. I can't remember where Hickman county falls withing the poorest counties in the state, but the last report I saw it wasn't number 2. The US just put out a publicatin of the top 100 poorest counties in the US. There were several in there from KY. If I find it I will let you know.

Marshall Co. HS '89. Back when our girls BB team always went to state and won it a few times. I know the Tilghman/Mayfield rivalry is old but where I live now has one of the oldest if not the oldest HS football rivalries in the country. Sherman Bearcats/Denison Yellow Jackets. Always a good game. I don't have kids in regular school until this year and we're moving to another town but if I'm able I will always try and make that game.

Sounds real familiar. I went to a one-room school through 8th grade, graduated from a county HS that did not have a football team, or a gym. We played basketball in an old, undersized gym with about 3-4 rows of bleachers down each side of the floor and a couple of rows in a balcony, and barely enough room to stand out of bounds. I too carried a pocket knife every day and nobody cared. Once old enough to drive, nobody would have thought twice about having a rifle or shotgun in the car for after school activity. As a 16 year old, I actually drove myself and other athletes to away games rather than take a bus on a few occasions. Interestingly, I suggested the name for our athletic teams at our new county HS and that name was "Rebels". That name is actually still being used, but I wonder how long that will last in this age of ridiculous "political correctness."
