Illegal deer farm found

By Sun staff Tuesday, February 18, 2003 2:29 PM EST

Officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources charged a Clark County man Friday with operating an illegal deer farm on the Big Stoner Road.

John M. Debold, 52, also was charged with illegally holding elk, fallow deer, axis deer, caribou and white-tailed deer in captivity without a permit. The operation was discovered after Debold allegedly attempted to illegally sell elk to undercover officers.

Col. David Casey of the KDFWR said officers confiscated several illegal animals and are processing them for testing at the University of Kentucky diagnostic lab. Casey said the animals pose a threat to Kentucky's native herds because they could have been shipped from areas infected with chronic wasting disease, a fatal disease in deer and elk that has hit 11 states.

Officer Sgt. James Bingham led the investigation.

Word from inside the Dept. is that illegeal shipments into and intra-state are fairly common. They recieve tips about them some times and are on the lookout.

I know when we had that mountain lion around here for awhile it did not surprise the guys I talked to from the Dept. one bit. It seems this kind of crap goes on constantly. CWD will be here yet![V][xx(]

[xx(]WoW,I just clicked that link and did a little reading.
Quiet disturbing if you ask me. "Whats a 150" deer worth" Lots of talk about "Shooter bucks".

What do they do? Pay $3000+ for a big deer and then go shoot it? That sure was they way it seemed to me. I think everyone should do a little reading on there. It turned my stomatch. It's one thing to raise deer or elk for research, enjoyment, etc. But to raise em' to be big, and then sold to be shot on a canned hunt?????

Will our current bans on import create illegal big dollar "black market" for pen raised deer and elk??
Price for whiskey goes up in a dry county! [:I]

Valley, ask Multi about that hillbilly moonshine, the big whitetails are the same thing in the eyes of many.

I could see this coming years ago. Guys from the big city and the high-tech world with BIG bucks, wanting bragging rights and they got the bucks to buy it. Think about it this way, you don't have to know how to fish to catch a marlin, the skipper and the boat does it..... all you do is reel. Fact is, most of these guys know nothing about hunting or very little to say the least(though there are always exceptions to the rule). For the most part, it's all about MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, if you got the bucks you can probably get in the record books. I'd say that's as bad as it can get for the hunting world. I'll tell you this much, I did it the old fashioned way, anything I have ever got I did it on my own and I'm proud of that fact. Personally I think they should line up all those illegal game farmers and use them for target practice. Good Hunting To Real Hunters..... The Rest Can Go To Hell.[:(!]

Guys, I've cruised these sites before and I am convinced and have been so for awhile that CWD is coming. This will be how it gets here. If it's not already[xx(][V]

This is why the F&W DEPT's tenacious and adamant fight to keep control of Cervids is so important. SB112 goes to a higher level today.

Make the calls and send the Emails.

OC- you certainly are entitled to your opinion, but please remember people are free to do just about what ever they please with THEIR money. I don't tell people how to spend theirs and they don't tell me how to spend mine. Some folks like to shoot animals on a game farm, others go to some hot, sand infested, people infested place in Orlando, others ride bikes from Seattle to N.Y.. Let us not forget that there are folks in this country that want to prevent us from shooting ANYTHING and don't even like the fact that my SUV takes me to work everyday.

Yep KYhunter, I guess you're right. You can do what ever you want with your money. You go kill a record class deer in a pen and I'll go do it the hard way. By the way KYhunter I HAVE done it the hard way. I have a non-typical mule deer thats 37" wide with 36 points, 5 of those points are drop points, it came from Northern Nevada years ago. I have another typical mule deer, a 4x4 with eye guards thats 28" wide from New Mexico. If you go to search and type in (high desert predator hunting school) you might be able to see the non-typical, it may have been taken off by now I'm not sure but check it out. Sorry we don't agree. I do agree to disagree, this is America and I think we can do that without having to pay, RIGHT? [:D][;)]

Sorry to disappoint OC, but I never have hunted within the confines of a fence. I was merely pointing out that folks can spend their money however they see fit and need not get my approval. I never questioned whether or not you did it the "hard way". How or where you hunt matters not to me. Congratulations on your fine Nevada harvest.

PS. OC- I can surely assume your trophies were harvested by bow, correct?

Kyhunter-is that supposed to mean that a trophy has to be taken by archery before it's a trophy???

Multi! You just ask my question. I'm a bowhunter though not exclusively and enjoy it. However their must be some bowhunters that think they hold the moral high ground for whatever reason. I would have called that buck a trophy if I had killed it with anything other than my truck.

Thanks multi and INKY for proving my point! It does NOT have to be archery(blackpowder or even bowie knife) to be considered a trophy. Whatever the INDIVIDUAL decides to do with HIS(or HER) money, time and effort. What one person considers doing it the "hard way" is totally different from the next and we ought to allow each to do his own thing. If some fellas want a big buck and willing to spend HIS money HIS way, then I really shouldn't badmouth him even if I don't want to go that route.

I guess I would have agreed with you a few years ago before the CWD word got out. Now, anything that can be done to shut down small cervid game farms should be done. The Senate Bill 112 is a start. Canned hunts should be banned. Penning animals that belong to the state and the people in it is wrong. The potential for diaster is strong. With only 40 such operations in Kentucky, it's crazy to take a chance with a $400 million dollar industry.
