Just got back from town regular unleaded hit $2.49.9 and looks like it is going higher. I know living on a fixed income except for my part time surveyor helpers job I won't be making any long distance trips in the near future. I am sure if it stays up a lot of planned hunting trips will be cancled this fall by lots of hunters.

Buy a motorcycle! I got one fairly cheap and I'm getting almost 60 miles per gal.
Gas will go higher, I just saw on the news oil hit $66 a barrel...WHY!

trust me

Some of my coworkers commute pretty good distances, and they say that $2.00 gas was tolerable, but $2.50 and above will force them to make some changes. Carpooling, trading down, that kind of stuff. I know I haven't been making any trips down the interstate lately, and won't like start now. Maybe I'm just getting old, but a moped is starting to look pretty good right now.

I have cut down on my driving quite a bit.. It's only gonna get worse folks, might as well get ready for it. As my mother use to always say, " Boys, Christmas is gonna be a little thin this year..":(

Thank goodness I can hunt just behind the house. Getting a good size deer home on a motorcycle might be one trick I haven't learned yet...LOL.

As to why the price keeps going up..who the heck can keep up with all the excuses they come up with nowdays. I even seen somethng about a leak at a refinery in Texas. I worked next door to a couple refinerys for 30 years, they had leaks and blowouts on almost a weekly basis and it didn't at that time cause the prices to go up.

There are all sorts of BS rumors as to why the price is rising at this rate, and most of them are true.. It is and was created by the oil industry many years ago, and for whatever reason several administrations have chose not to do a damn thing.. Probably because govt and big oil are in bed together..

Here is some interesting reading that might help shed some insight as to how we have gotten to this point..

Anybody got a bicycle for sale?

I was about to say to get a bike in response to the "what can you do" question. It may seem a little liberal and hippieish perhaps, but once you get a road bike you'll see the light. You'll look at all these traffic jams that consist of dozens if not hundreds of huge vehicles that only have one person in them each, then you'll remember about everybody whining about gas prices, and all you will be able to do is chuckle to yourself.

First of all, think about the costs. The simple (and underestimated) way to calculate it is based off of gas alone, and based off of a 15 mile one way trip, assuming you got 15 mpg from your truck, at $2.25 a gallon you're spending $4.50 a day just in gas alone. However, think about insurance, maintenance, tires, etc. The IRS says that the average cost is 40.5 cents per mile. 15 miles X 2 ways X 5 days a week X 4 weeks a month X 6 months X 40.5 cents = $1,458 for 6 months, and that doesn't count payments, just gas and maintenance for that drive just to work and back.

Not only that, but you're getting exercise. Currently it actually only takes me 8 miles to get to work. It takes me 15 minutes to drive that route. It only takes me 25 minutes to bike it. So I'm out an extra 20 minutes a day yet I get to squeeze in a pretty hardcore 50 minutes worth of exercise per day. If I leave early enough, I ride the scenic route and get in 30 miles a day worth of biking. Any time that you feel fat and say that you don't have time to exercise, think about that short trip to work or some other halfway nearby destination that you do on a regular basis, there's got to be something even if you do commute incredibly long distances that would make riding a bike totally impractical.

But yeah, you get alot stronger, you lose alot of weight, you save alot of money, you emit no greenhouse gases or smog whatsoever... so why don't I see more people commuting to work??? RIDE YOUR BIKE PEOPLE!!! :)

Sixpack...I am starting to feel like I have crossed the border into Canada. Since your closer than most of us do you have any idea what gas is going for across the border nowdays ? If they have had prices go up like us it should be $6 a gallon by now.

Duster, one of my co-workers just returned from a fishing trip in Canada this week, he said that gas prices at the Marina were .2 cents cheaper than it was in Detroit.

I don't know what the exact percentage is now, could be the same, but not too long ago alot of people were surprised to hear that gas prices were made up of about 55% taxes. Even the places that try to make you aware of how much taxes you pay only look on the surface, I mean they show that you pay 28% or 30% tax but the problem with that calculation is that is just the direct taxes at the pump - the manufacturing/refining process is taxed as well. Don't forget that you're paying money for gas that has already been taxed by income tax. Just for argument's sake, lets say that fed income, state income, city income, etc. tax hits you at 30%. So you make $10, you get to take $7 of it home. At $2.55 a gallon, you only get 2.75 gallons, which won't even fill up my small lawn mower. If 55% of that is tax, you pay $3.85 worth of taxes. So basically if you make $10 and buy gas with it, $6.85 ($3.85 gas + $3 income) of that $10 is tax!

England is actually much worst as far as gas prices, they've had $5 a gallon gas (or maybe worse now) for the longest time, but they subsidize public transportation and diesel from the gas profits. That's why most everybody has very small cars if they even have one at all. Most people buy a small car for "necessary evil" trips but still use public transportation whenever possible (which is a much better system than over here), so their vehicles can easily last them 20 years or more simply because they rarely get driven.

I know. Sounds bad to say that 2.55 a gallon is a good deal. But compared to 3.05 it is a great deal!

Mom and Dad have a good line of credit and are going in the hole so Junior can drive something nice. That and Mom and Dad probably steal several thousand dollars each year from the government in taxes by reporting fake farming losses, so they have a little more money to blow than you and I. I 've saw the kids you're talking about, they hang out usually in malls and their Red Wings have never been on dirt.

Aint that the truth. Heck growing up I couldent afford a pair of red wings to work in. I mostly wore old "gum" boots on the farm. Horse and cow manure comes off rubber a lot easier than leather. our local schools are full of the too.

Mike went way back to retrieve this one...:D...Gas has still not gone down tho....:(.... I have to agree with the crook statement for the most part...If refineing cost is part of why gas is so high then why would a product such as diesel which takes less of a refineing process be so much higher ??

more people buying diesel vehicles when it was cheaper has increased the demand is the only thing i can figure.

I didnt know if it was just my school that was like that or not. I swear our parking lot sounds like a truck pull or something in the mornings. None of the true farmers i know have red wings or justins. And they dont hang out in malls haha.
