View Full Version : What Rifle Are You Taking Hunting This Fall?

As most of you know, I'm one of the guys always talking about these old military rifles. So its time to put my money where my mouth is, and take one of 'em hunting. There is a few factors that come into play with my choice of what I'm gonna take this year. I need to go to my hunting area and walk it over a few times before the season gets here. Most of my rifles would be suitable brush guns, especially my M44 and M48. So out of my 10 rifles, I've so far narrowed it down to 4. Here's what I have in mind so far. My 8mm M48 mauser, Swiss K-31 in 7.5 cal., British Enfield in .303, and my Russian M44 in 7.62x54.
Here are pics of three of them: http://usera.imagecave.com/Josh762x54/
I'll be hunting where the shots will be about 50 yards, so I'll just use open sights. What are you guys using this rifle season?

For years I used the reliable 30-30. Then one day I started looking real close at some of the large deer killed here in Kentucky. It was then that I decided that the 30-30 was not my best choice. I now hunt with a Ruger 270 and it is a great choice. I have taken two 200lb + Kentucky Whitetails in the last three years and the 270 made quick kills at ranges from 100-150 yards. We all know that the 30-30 has killed more deer than all other calibers combined, but when that "buck-of-a-lifetime" steps out make sure you have enough gun.
For shots over 50 yards my trusty 270, I pack a 44 mag. for close shots. I enjoy the handgun almost as much as bow hunting.

Most of our shots are in the 100 to 250 yd range.

If I go, (still a big "if"), I'll take either the TCR 7mm-08, or the T/C Hawken .50 . I wish I could still shoot the Golden Eagle Falcon, but the shoulder and elbow have had enough. As you can tell, I believe in single shots.
Shoot straight, shoot close, and shoot once.

A picture of the mauser can be seen via the link on the first post. Its the one with the bayonet and stuff in the picture. I've shot about 30 rounds (old military surplus)out of it so far, and it groups pretty well.

In the woods it will be my ole marlin 30-30, and in the fields I will use my Browning medallion in 300 WSM, yes it is overkill, but I bought hoping I will get lucky and draw a elk tag, might as well get some use out of it.

Savage model 110 in 7mm Rem Mag. OUCH!!!
you got that right OUCH,
I owned a Savage model 110, 7mm Mag at one time, and I was happy to trade it off,
now I have a Winchester 7mm Mag and love it, My 16 yr old daughter even shoots it, and she shoots it without hesitation,
it's a completely different monster, compared to the Savage,
I would even let my 10 yr. old nephew shoot this Winchester 7mm Mag.
I am very satified with it.

Those Savage 110s kick like mules for some reason, I think it is the stock design. But if you can put up with the recoil most of em shoot itty bitty groups. I like them a lot. A lot of people think they are ugly too but the proof is in the pudding, and they are one of the best shooting factory rifles out there in my opinion. I'd rather have one of them than a Winchester or Remington, but to each his own.
I don't want to take any chances, so I will be using a Barrett 50 cal BMG...:D

My wife is takin' her Browning BAR .270 and I'm goin' in with my new S&W .500. I love to hunt with a handgun. Three years ago I busted one with my Model 29 S&W. When you go with a handgun, you give up the 100+ yard shots, however, I'll risk it!
TRUST ME, I'm with ya, "One shot, one kill"!!! ;) When I hear four and five rounds goin' off, I'm wonderin' what the heck is goin' on! Good luck, fellas!

Recoil is not too bad but more than I expected. It can get .6" groups at 100 yards with factory loads. I plan on really tuning her in next summer. I am gonna reload this winter and have tons of different arrangements to test. I used a limb saver recoil pad. I am very impressed with the pad.

Damn, if I was getting .6 groups with factory ammo out of that puppy, and was going to use it as a hunting rifle and not a bench gun, I'd not bother reloading. Sounds like an awesome stick.
Those Limbsaver pads rock, so do the Pachmayr Decelerators. Nice cushy recoil pads make a world of difference on the big'uns.

My parents bought me a savage 110E .270 15 years ago and I took a Deer with it every year. They passed away last year and I wanted to save the rifle for my son to use when he is older. I went out last year and bought a dream gun of mine Remington LSS 7mm Mag and topped it off with a range finding Burris. I love the set up but last year I did not see one deer during Rifle season to be able to test the rifle and get its first harvest. Very accurate though 5 shot group 1/2 inch MOA at 100yards supported. So I am pleased with it.

Ok here gos the debate. 7.62x39 yugo. I have hunted for the last 4 years with this gun shots from 15 yards to 173 yards. The short shot 60 yards and down for the count. The longest shot droped in its tracks. I thought the stopping power was in question but after a test season. Its the gun of choice i shoot this gun all year and it gives me good grouping. I have a winchester 30 30 and have taken a lot of deer with it. But i,am use to the yugo and get good results with it. Some say its not large enough for deer but i say meat in the freezer thats the real test. The meat poles been bent so far ever time i go with it. I would like to come up on a good used 270 nothing wrong with a good long range flat shooter for sure.
