Good year for us also. I don't know the count, but probably more than I want to mention. I know a lot of guys get a lot more, but I don't always shoot them and I don't go as much as I'd like. I went most weekends at least one day until Jan when I had to stop until the last weekend. I run some average little hounds and I have a few places to hunt. Rabbits seemed to decline in a few areas I hunt and increase in others so I would say they are about to peak, but that is just my novice opinion.
CPA,
It's nice to see you back on here. Check out the Cyberhunters Public Forum. We could use your input.
Thanks,
Rob

Thanks Rob, I've been lurking for some time but with everything going on I still have very little time to type, but a rabbit post can always pull me out of the shadows.
Perrymax -- we had to pull out the cold nosers that last snowy weekend but 2 of us got 14 in the snow in 2 days -- it was not 17 but we were pretty pleased to see them run in the snow. I have learned a new appreciation for them colder noses this year. I got some that can't even run in those conditions, but we put the right ones down (only 3) and it worked well. I got out Saturday before the storm and they could not loose them.

There are usually two of us who hunt. My buddy has some pretty good beagles. This year we did not hunt as much for rabbits, spent a lot of time deer hunting, but we still got about 50. The last four years we have averaged over 100 each year. There seem to be a lot of rabbits in Breckenridge Co. We usually hunt 4 or 5 days a week and the numbers seem to rebound each year.

Adam: We give almost all the rabbits we get to a number of elderly people in the county and they really seem to appreciate it. There are days when we don't fire a shot but just enjoy the beagles running. We ran five old dogs and four pups most of the season. The pups really came on the last two week of the season.

My dad and I have three solid bitches and their "meat dogs." In the last three seasons we've killed 205. Each year we average about 16 hunts. I wished we could've gone more times, but with dad's heartattack, working overtime, and this years snowy weather I have no complaints. The killing really isn't that important to me I just like to hear the hounds run. I agree that rabbits populations are on the rise here in Western Kentucky. There have been a lot of times where we've jumped between 20-30 rabbits out of one piece of ground. The key is cover. I urge farmers and other landowners to leave all the cover they can. It really helps the wildlife. Thanks and Good Hunting.

Yep, the population is up.....the little citters want to dig holes under my patio. I bought a "have-a-heart" trap & in the last 2 years I've caught about 45-50. I take the up the road (about 3 miles) and show them a neighbor's garden & turn them loose. Everytime I see him, he fusses about the rabbit population.
I left him another this morning!!

Birdman,
It is in fact like fertilizing a mans yard...Funny thing....many people offered to mow my grass this winter since I am here in GA....you know just trying to help me out....and my wife as well...hard to mow grass in the winter though....hmmm!!! I am here protecting the families, troops, and civilian workers here on this lovely 300,000 acre facility, with 110 MP's mind you. Turkey season is in here now and came in over a week and a half ago...they are not gobbling though. Too early and what gobblers have been seen are with hens...same as last year in KY, they will gobble a little on the roost but once they hit the ground, they shut up. I have not had the opportunity to hunt them yet...no shotgun deployed with me...I did deploy a rod and reel, plus my tackle box...there is some good fishing on these big ass ponds down here, but have not got to go yet...some of my troops have gone with no avail at this time. One of these ponds has a 21 inch size limit and I reckon the GA record bass was caught out of one of these Ft. Stewart ponds. I did here some quail a whistling around the other morning out in one of training areas...that was like music to my ears...I have to log onto the RGS homepage to here a grouse a drumming. I showed some of my troops the tape you all done and sent to me...they got a kick out of it. Some of these guys don't even know what a grouse is...amazing.

I'll get you a tape out Monday, of the field trial, we've been bussy and things are getting worse around here not the work but the situation. You hang in and we'll see you later.

I've only seen 2 this year -- these rains are tough on their nest. I'll be a lot better judge after running the beagles this weekend.
