Is it smart to use wd-40 on your guns

Works ok on moving parts. You don't need it on the blue because it will remove a small part of it each time. Use paste car wax on the exterior parts of your guns and you won't have to worry about it.

Yes, you can wax your guns and handle them without wiping off the moisture from your hands. We found out years ago at the gun store that it works better than most anything else on guns that are handle several times a day. You can use a light oil or dry slide type lube on moving parts when you disassemble and clean and use the wax on the outside of the metal parts, and wood parts as well. Doesn't work to good for syn. stocks though.

It's more of a cutting oil than a lubricant. I would use it if I didn't have any other option. You should probably use at least a 10 weight.

Gun bluing is nothing more than a form of rust. Oil removes rust. The wax will protect it and also protect the finish from more rust. Repeated oiling and wiping will wear the bluing out.

wd-40 [ water displacement formula 40 ] does just that it displaces water and fights [ read eats ] rust. thats why it helps loosen rusted bolts. as you guys know and its been stated in this thread blued finishes is just rust no more no less. wd-40 will never touch a finished firearm of mine. however when doing a complete strip down for cleaning or refinishing wd40 is excellent to clean internals such as the bolt , trigger housing parts etc... just my 2 cents

I have read that WD 40 will eventually become sticky on the internals of a gun (trigger, etc.) and attract crud, binding up the works.

With that said, I have also read of other people who say they have used it exclusively on guns and report no problems.

Rem Oil ain't that expensive. I use it on my guns' moving parts and am satisfied.

Only thing I use WD 40 for on a gun is removing surface rust. WD 40 and 0000 steel wool will do absolute wonders for surface rust, make that old rusty 22 of grampa's look like a million bucks.

WD-40 does indeed become sticky and lacquer-like if used heavily. It should never be used to flush lockworks, or trigger mechanisms, unless there is a lot of moisture present (water-displacement, formula #40). I use it occasionally on my blued weapons, but just a bit on a flannel cloth, not a heavy layer. It might attack your bluing if you dunked your gun in a vat of the stuff and left it there.

I use ATF for regular wipedowns in a slightly damp basement environment. No rust, no problems.

We used CLP on our M-16A2's, I think it means (clean, lubricate and protect) but not sure. Basically Rem oil. they had some other stuff for extreme cold conditions, looked like goop. the key is not to much, the more CLP we put on the more the sand was attracked. After you lubricate you moving parts wipe off the excess or say hello to dirt and grit.

I used WD-40 for about 20 years and never had any trouble with it,than I started to hear all the bad things about it and change to rem oil.but I have a few guns that I used it on all them years and they still look like new guns,no damage to the blueing at all.but I think that it might have damage the finish on one of my wood stocks that I hunted with in the rain a few times, when I would come home with it I would wipe the whole gun down with wd40,maybe to heavily. and the finish on the wood seems to be screw up now.
