Those type of frig's have to be level or nearly level to work properly. The propane part doesn't get super cold, only to keep it cool after it's been cold on electric.

This past hunting season , when I brought my camper home ,I keep the fridge door open .When I did this I got a whiff of amonia .Does that mean its going bad ?? I never smelled that before .

Skeeter : I may be tellin you someting you already know. The propane fridge uses propane as a heating source to circulate the refrigerant through the coils . The heat expands the gas to get it moving . I say most but maybe not all of these types use amonia as the gas . Amonia is not as common as other refrigerants ( r-11 , r-12, ect..) but its been used in refrigeration for a long time. They even use it in large tonage chillers for commercial applications .Fortunately the ones we have at work used some form of freon and I never had to work with amonia systems. Amonia in this form is a stronger respitory irritant the what you smell in cleaning solutions . Like anhydrous amonia if you can relate.

If you say you smelled amonia.... my guess you have a leak in the coils and the amonia has or is leaking out. It dont have to be a very big leak to lower the amonia level where it does not operate right . The bad news is the electric side is just another heating source for circulating the amonia .The electric with this type as Multi stated...is usually more efficient but if everthings operating properly they should be equal . They rarely have a seperate compressor . Otherwords it may not work on either propane or electric .

I had a small camper with a dual source fridge . It worked good either way and where I usually camped there was no electricity . It even had a small freezer compartment and would make ice about as fast as your fridge at home . They do have to be level to operate . My advice.... have someone at a camper/ motor home dealer check it out . They may be able to repair or at least give you another opinion . Good Luck .

You can hit a junkyard and probably get another duel source fridge out of a camper for next to nothing. If you can't find one in a junkyard there are usually hundreds on (hate to say it) Ebay. I would not even mess with the old one, but just replace it.
