What scope brand do you have on your deer rifle? Power? i would like to know the good things and bad things you like about it. I need a good scope to put on my new 270 that i have. Im looking at the redhead epic series in a 4-14 power. its a 149.99 in the redhead book. just looking for some suggestions and opinions.

I have a Redfield (Made in USA) 3 to 9 Power Widefield mounted on my Ruger M-77 MKII .270 Winchester.

I have a 3-9 x 40 Leupold Vari X II mounted on a .270 and a 3.5-10 x 50 Leupold Vari X III mounted on a 7mm.08.

The 3.5-10 is considerably brighter early and late in the day. It is also much brighter on a rainy day inside the canopy of the woods. It is also alot more expensive than the 3-9.

I am looking for a 3-9 x 50 for a .243 now. I have never used one , but I would have to think it would be close to the brightness of the 3.5-10.

Just my 2 cts worth,,,,

Spend as much as you can afford cause with scopes you really do get what you pay for. For a top of the line scope you'll spend as much as you spent on your rifle and it is well worth it. I have $100 scopes and I have $250 scopes and I have $400 scopes, and you can hold them up one at a time and surely tell the difference. I use the cheap scope and it does well but when it is late in the evening and a squirrel is flattened out on a limb in the shade it won't do the job like the expensive scopes will. For my money Leupold makes the best scope. My Redfields are good too and the Simmons is OK.

Got a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 on my savage 30-06 long action. It's a fine scope for the $$. Whole heartedly agree on the advise of spending as much as you can on a scope. Check out Sightron II they make a fine scope for the money as well.

I would agree with the folks that say get the very best scope you can afford. When I first started MZ hunting, I didn't understand how important this is. I mounted a cheap Tasco 4X on my MZ, sighted it in & thought I was ready. The first morning, a nice buck walks out a 35 yds. I put the cross hairs in the center of his chest & pulled the trigger. When the smoke cleared, he was still standing there, looking at me. Then he snorted & got out of Dodge.

The next day, I shot at another nice buck & missed him, too. When I checked the gun, it was shooting 18 inches low & a foot to the right. When resighting the gun, I found that it was sight in & shoot three or 4 bullets in a single area then take on a totally new center & start grouping there. I went to a pal of mine who said he had once had the same problem. He told me cheap scopes often cant stand up to the ballistic blast of a MZ & will get knocked off center by this blast. The answer is to get a quality scope.

Oh, I really like the optics of older Redfield Widefield scopes. I usually buy them off of eBay for a fraction of what a new one would cost. I've also had a Nikon scope, which was good. Leupold are very good but a little too rich for my pocketbook.
