I have been thinking of getting a turkey gun. Anybody have any recommendations on a single shot. I'm looking for something that is plain and simple, but has the essentials for a good turkey gun?

NEF makes a decent little camo turkey gun for a little over $100 I think. I found an old goose gun($35) and had barrel cut, screw-in chokes and a vent rib put on with flouro sight. I have less than 2oo bucks total in it and it fits my bill. Short, light, looks good(to me) and shoots good as well.

I dont know why but everytime I put a turkey load in a single shot it gets really mean. Kicks like a mule and I am use to shooting 3 1/2 mag loads.

The light weight was one of the reasons I was interested in a single shot. I didn't think about the effect of the light weight on the guns kick. Thanks for the information.

Any 3" or 3 1/2" kicks hard. I shoot an 870 3 1/2" that kicks like a frigging mule. Seeing a turkey flip upside down seems to ease the pain though!!!![^]

I wouldn't rule out a single shot. If you go that route, pattern with standard field loads. After you get the gun shooting where you want it. Try your mags. Yep, they are gonna kick. Just shoot a couple at a time and work on it over a few weeks instead of one day.

I wouldn't rule them out, but these guys ain't lying, they smack you good. Actually, it wasn't the "kick" that bothered me as much as the muzzle jump. First turkey load I ever shot was from a single shot that must've weighed 5 lbs. at most. Didn't notice the shoulder soreness until later, but immediately wondered if my jaw was broke.

A ported barrel or choke could help some with the muzzle jump, but I don't know if any single shots come with that from the factory.
