Camped for four days on primitive site 20A on the lake, next to Trooper Island. Had a wonderful time, my 3 sons (10, 11, and 15) fixed breakfast every morning, put up the tents, loaded and unloaded the boat. Now that they are older, camping is much easier.

As usual the lake was beautiful, the water clear and just the right temperature for swimming. The only negative was the rednecks in 5 houseboats that pulled up in our cove on the last evening at about 9:00 PM, horns honking, drunks screaming, music blaring and women dancing on the top of the boats (That part was ok). A few minutes later they were joined by 6 ski-boats and a handfull of jet-skis, full of what I call the "LCE" (lower criminal element). They finally went to bed around 2:00 AM.

I decided some payback would be in order at about 6:00 AM, but to my amazement, most of them were prowling around on the bank or on top of the boats already. Just like in hunting, we have a certain proportion of slobs on the lake. In all my years of camping and fishing on Cumberland, Dale Hollow, Laurel, Barren, Kentucky, and Barkley lakes, I have never seen more rude behavior up close. The houseboats pulled no more than a 100 yards away from our camp and between another camp when they set-up shop.....which would have been fine if they would have acted decent. I had bad thoughts all evening about the Buckeye and Hoosier Navy, and then to my surprise, all of the ski-boats were Kentucy boats!

Anyway, if you ever have a chance to camp at Dale Hollow, do it. The water can't be beat.

Been going there for years. My uncle has a place at Wolf River and we have an annual guys trip every year which is next weekend. Dale Hollow is a beautiful place and the fact that it is farther from Luavul than Barren, Nolin and Rough keeps it from getting overcrowded on the weekends. I have no desire to ever go back to Nolin because of the weekend crowds. If you fill a bottle with Dale Hollow lake water and hold it up next to a bottle of spring water it looks the same. Did you do any fishing? We have a few trolling spots that we hit with the pontoon that usually produce a couple bass or walleye. Nothing better than walleye IMO.

I did not fish much this time...just realxed most of the time and played and swam with the kids. I used to do alot of trolling there and on Cumberland, but for some reason, 3 kids, a wife, farm, and a job caused me to reduce it for some reason.

As my kids get older, I am moving back into some other areas that I used to frequent like fishing, bow hunting, and birdhunting. You are right, nothing like a big walleye!

As far as the water on Dale Hollow, I took some water samples several years ago there and had the coliform bactieria level on the water checked. The results for those samples on that day came back clean or "0 colonies". I did the same thing on Cumberland with the same results. I was pretty amazed considering how many houseboats probably dump their gray and balck water holding tanks in the lake. The spring water I was raised on in Butler County later in life was tested and came back TNTC (Too Numerous Too Count) with bacteria. Most of the groundwater in KY is contaminated to some extent with bacteria. The good thing is that our body can usually adapt to it.

The rule of thumb is that if your well or spring gets muddy after a rain, it is probably contaminated with bacteria, since the muddy water is indicative of surface water run-off. If your well or spring is clear after a hard rain, then it may be free of the bad bacteria or have a low colony count.

Have fun on your trip and send some pics back.
