It's everywhere at Peabody. Some states list it as a noxious weed.My area wildlife biologist said you don't want it.He said quail could starve to death eating the seed.I don't remember why.Native warm season grass is way better for rabbits. It's better cover for rabbit and quail and more nutricious for all wildlife. It looks alot better too.Best of all,you can get financial assistance if you agree to kill fescue and plant nwsg.(HIP,WHIP)(5 ACRE MIN.)I have 15 acres of big bluestem, little bluestem, indiangrass, side oats grama, switchgrass and even a little blue grama. It's a whole lot easier on the dogs then briers and holds just as many rabbits.

You want something for rabbits to eat, you'd be hard pressed to find something better than Fall Blend Biologic. From my experience, it's a lot better for bunnies than it is for deer.

I agree with perrymax, I read somewhere that you didn't want serecia for the same reason. Switch grass is excellent for rabbits, little bluestem is great for quail. I also have warm seasom grasses (indian grass, big blue stem, switch grass and partridge pea for my legume) on 18 acres of river bottom land that I signed up in a CREP program.

KDFWR has been converting sericea to natives grasses at Peabody for several years. They have done a lot already , but, there is a lot more to go. Long term project.[8D]

Sideoats gramma will grow anywhere.Mine is doing great and I have more rock than soil because of poor soil management and overgrazing in the past.It only grows to about 2 foot and that's the stems with the seed. The leaf useally is shorter than a foot.I planted about an acre of sideoats grama, blue grama and little bluestem.Little blue is the tallest at about 3 foot.I just wanted to experiment with some shorter grass. The rest of the farm is mixed with big blue, switchgrass and indiangrass. It gets up to 7 foot.

If your into small game,I strongly recomend nwsg!!

From what I've read eastern gammagrass is the most nutricious grass there is.It makes exelant hay,if cut at the right time. It's a tall grass like big blue and indiangrass.I've never tried it because you have to use a no till corn planter or disc. From my experiance,if you disc first,I don't have time to control the weeds. You get twice as many weeds if you disc, even with plateau.I can get a nwsg drill from NRCS for $50,but it won't no-till eastern gamma seed. The seed is to big.
