I am well aware that you can not spotlight coyotes in KY and night vision scopes are not legal, however, can coyotes be hunted and shot legally in KY at night. Example: Snow on the ground and plenty of moonlight, using a regular scope.

Anyone know?

here the insert from the guide..
Shooting Hours
Species for which seasons included in this guide EXCEPT raccoon,opossums and frogs may be taken during daylight hours only....daylight hours are 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset

So according to this hunting Yotes after legal shooting hours would be prohibited..

"Species for which seasons included in this guide....."

One loophole is that there is no "season" for 'yotes, it could be interpreted in any way.

On page 7 of the guide it says;

YEAR-ROUND SEASON ( Coyote, groundhog, wild hog, English sparrow and starling.)

There IS a season on coyote and it is open all year. A CO pointed this out to me a few weeks ago. The last time we had a good snow with a full moon I got the idea of going with my shotgun and caller and stopped by the store, the CO was in there and we got to talking about it. He knew me and knew I would be on my farms and didn't really care to have a few more yotoes missing but if someone heard my shooting and called it up he would have to come and check it out, sound caries a long way on those quite snowly nights. I went home then back yote hunting the next morning.

I'm almost positive that it IS legal at night, but only without the use of artificial light. I will try to find the reg. relating to this. A brief search of the regs did reveal that the use of electronic or mechanical calls are only legal for coyotes during daylight hours - which would limit you to mouth blown calls.

Gentlemen,

I have the answer to my own question. I spoke with KY Dept. of Fish & Wildlife this morniong. According to Leutenant Mike Fields of the Enforcement Division, you can night hunt for coyotes in KY with the following caveats:

* No e-callers after dark.

* No night vision, other than "Starlight Scopes" or "conventional
scopes."

* No spotlights.

That means, mouth calls only using regular scopes or open sights.

This is according to section 301KAR3.030.

He also told me that they are catching several people poaching deer who say they are "coyote hunting."

For whatever it's worth, there's the answer.
