On this day 61 years ago

Over 11,000 planes accompanied 5,000 ships carrying 150,000 men and 30,000 vehicles landed on 5 beaches in Normandy, and 6 parachute regiments were dropped somewhere behind enemy lines.

The Normandy campaign would cost over 425,000 Allied and German troops killed, wounded, or missing.

From D-Day to Christmas of 1944 German POW's averaged 30,000 per month and there were 33 POW Detention facilities in Texas alone.

At Omaha Beach Company A 116th Inf suffered 97% casualties during the first 10 minutes of the landing. The small town of New Bedford Virginia had 35 men in that unit and 20 were killed on D-Day.

"If you forget what happened here then your never going to improve things. It's never going to get any better. We must keep places like this alive" 80 year old veteran Donald Null of Federick, Md

Been to all 5 beaches. Got to visit them in 2002 while on a deployment overseas. Camped out for the weekend and the locals praised the U.S. They welcomed my freinds and I, we had a wonderful yet sobering time. Here are some pics if you do not mind.

GREAT SCOTT MAN, POST MORE PICTURES!!!

I want every picture of Normandy you have. If too many to post, send me a PM with your address and I'll send a CD and a few bucks to cover the time and trouble of burning the disk.

To tour the great battlefields of Europe is one of my dreams. Never served, but have the greatest respect for those that did, and do.

Maybe western Europe should remember that when they call the USA a
war-hungry nation.
