Anyone here use those dip baits on cats? I'm kinda old fashion about cats and baits. I usually stick to shad and night crawlers. On Memorial Day, I took the wife out on the river (Ohio) to do some catfishing. She had never been (crappie fishing is the only thing she's ever done). On a whim, I bought some G&S cheese dip bait and some of those dip worms with the treble hook and tubing full of holes.
Well, I put the dip bait on my wifes line and I used crawlers. After 30 min, she had landed 4 channel cats that were from 2-4#, I had 0. I tied on one of those "worms" and dipped it. It was all I could do to keep 2 poles going (my 1 and the wifes 1). As soon as one was baited, I was taking a fish off the other. It went like that for 2 1/2 hours till the small blues moved in and it was over.
Summery.......2 1/2 hours, 22 channel cats, smallest 1 1/2#, biggest 5 1/2# (wife caught that one and I'm still hearing about it), I don't know the count on the culled fish, but it was over 10 that were thrown back.
Kind of neat to try something like that and it work even though I know fish can be picky from day to day on what they like to eat.
Only thing I didn't like was the treble hooks, what a pain. I tried a single hook but couldn't get a hook set, maybe something to do with the tube and how they mouth the bait, don't know. It didn't take but a few times and I put the treble hook back on and was in the fish again.
If any of you are planning on trying some of the dip baits out there, take a pair of needle nose with you, those treble hooks are a pain to get out. Take some extra treble hooks also, if they take it to deep just cut it off and put on another, you can get the hook back when you clean it (though most of the time I forget lol)
