Thank God I haven't heard of anybody drowning on KY Lake or Lake Barkley this holiday weekend... there sure was ample opportunity.

A friend and I ran up Friday evening to try and squeeze in a little fishing before the place was overrun with holiday warriors. We were too late... the insanity had already begun and the place was crawling.

First thing, launch the boat and start fishing down some riprap to catch small bluegill for bait. Within the first 5 minutes I am soaking wet from 2 guys and a kid in a hundred year old bass boat that apparently didn't care if they swamped another boat by running right by it or not. http://www.refugeforums.com/ubb/madone.gif

Just about a half hour later, I look up and see a jet ski with a rather rotund woman driving and what appeared to be a teenager on the back. Kinda hurt my eyes so I didn't look very hard.. http://www.refugeforums.com/refuge/images/smilies/laugh.gif. My friend turns to me and says "look at that and tell me I'm not seeing what the hell I hope I'm not seeing". I figure he's just making a crack about what looked like an elephant riding a moped and wanted to make sure I saw it, so I told him I already saw it and I'm not looking again. He says again "no, is that what I think it is?" (visibly angry). I turn to see this idiot on the jetski, smackdab in the MIDDLE of KY Lake....on a JETSKI....with an INFANT sitting in her lap!!! http://www.refugeforums.com/ubb/madone.gif When I say infant, I mean looked to be younger than 6 months old!!

Sunday... I have to drive to the Nashville airport. As I cross the channel on the 68/80 bridge, I look down to see what looked to be a 16 foot jonboat.... with 6 people in it!! There was about 6 inches of freeboard above the water! http://www.refugeforums.com/ubb/eek.gif I get to the bridge over Barkley right at Canton and am brought to a 5 mph crawl... behind a vintage 50's camper being pulled by what looked to be an original year model S10 pickup. The way that truck looked, I wouldn't have driven it across the bridge by itself, let alone pull a camper. http://www.refugeforums.com/refuge/images/smilies/laugh.gif The bridge must have been too much for it... he took the first parking lot available after he crossed.

Monday... driving the wife and daughter up to the LBL nature center for an afternoon outing. Crossing the 68/80 bridge once again, I see a ski boat load of people pulling a slalom skier through someone's jug set and then around the buoys of a trotline next to the bridge!

I now remember why I quit going to the lake altogether on holiday weekends. I'm just glad I didn't hear of anything bad happening to anyone... other than a child being struck by a venomous snake at one of the campgrounds and the parents refusing the lifeflight helicopter (which was already in route) and treatment... http://www.refugeforums.com/ubb/frown.gif . True story. A patrolman I bumped into at the nature station told me that yesterday. Hope the child is ok.

Where do these idiots come from?

Any chance they were driving Dodge and GM vehicles?

On this end of the state, we have to deal with the "Buckeye Navy", which consists of a huge Friday afternoon armada coming down I-75 of 25' cabin cruisers armed with suitcases of money, cases of beer, and a total absence of water safety or courtesy. I avoid the major lakes on the holidays, unless we night fish and then we don't launch until at least 9:00 pm. The Buckeyes will run a cabin cruiser through 2 ft of water and a half-acre of brush just to run by a fisherman at full speed, waving and smiling, and then they wonder why this guy in the head of a slough is jumping and stomping and flipping the bird, after they went to such lengths to be friendly!

In my experience, the drunk rednecks can be dangerous too, but in a 12' john boat and a 6 hp outboard, they are just likely to hurt themselves. It's the big boys running around throwing wakes and being totally brain dead that end up hurting others.

I saw my buddy's father's 18 ft. Ranger after he got T-boned by a drunk Buckeye while bass fishing. It pushed the boat down in the water, and then the prop cut nice patterns in the upholstery. He ended up getting stitches in his back, but the boat actually wasn't damaged too badly, considering a cabin cruiser had just run completely over it broadside. He even bailed it out and drove it in, before he went to the hospital.

I hear that!! Nothing against our "friends" from the north, but they do make going to the lake an adventure. Thank God I haunt Herrington and not Cumberland. (Although that didn't stop 5 state troopers from hauling off some drunken idiots from Ohio a couple of weeks ago, after they started a fight on the back of my boat.) Come to think of it, those boys may have been a couple, because they were driving a Ford.:D

Their bad boating skills and manners don't just stay on the water, it's the same way on the road. My favorite was a few years ago when we went to Cumberland and one of my Buddies had just about had it with the "Buckeye Navy" and he asked this drunk lady, "Does Ohio have any good lakes?" And she replied smugly, "Of course, we have some of the best lakes and state parks in the country." And them my buddy blurts out "THEN WHY THE **** DON'T YOU USE THEM?" I have used that line since and it always makes for a good laugh, you guys should try it.:D

As big as the lakes are down this way, we get OOSers from all over. Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinios.. you name it. The MO and TN folks aren't too bad but the rest of them don't act like they share a brain between them.

I ran into a couple that drug their boat all the way from Wisconsin up there Friday. They were kind of down because the "stipers" they were catching weren't up to the 15" size limit.... actually they were catching good sized white bass (with no size limit), measuring and chunking them back.... I never said a word...:D

I live on Cumberland, and even I don't understand the mentality. Spend 30 grand on a boat (or maybe more, I have no idea what those monsters cost). 30 grand more on a big fancy pick-em-up or SUV to pull it. Spend God only knows how much in gas money, hotel money, food money, booze money, boat maintenance, etc....

Just to drag the family 3 hours away from home each weekend to a hot, smelly lake and sit there and get sunburnt and drink beer. For the dough people from Cincinnati piss away on Cumberland, the lake ought to be lined with gold.

I bet you a family of the Buckeye Navy persuasion could probably have a nice week in Vegas each year for what they spend just to get drunk on that damn lake each weekend. I don't understand it and most people around these parts don't either.

I have not been to Cumberland in a while, but I hear it's the show off spot for all the rich, party guys in the tri-state area these days. You'd really soil yourself if you knew what those boats cost. A good Fountain or Baja will run you upwards of $100,000 -$175,000. I hear that a lot of these guys are real young as well.

This might be a good time for a little lesson in Southern Etiquette for all of our northern friends (isn't that an oxymoron?).

1. You are in our world -- we live here. We know everything about this world, but if you insist on knowing more, we'll take your money and still make fun of you.

2. We are simple, God-fearing people who think folks should be quiet in restaurants and other public places. We also think that paisty, overweight tourists shouldn't wear speedos, tank tops, and bathing suits into Cracker Barrel.

3. We believe that children should be seen and not heard. Tell your children to sit down and shut up. You're not smarter than most of us so don't expect your children to be.

4. We don't talk funny, YOU talk funny. And it's "cropp-ee" not "crap-ie."

5. We don't expect tips but we do expect everyone to be courteous. "Sir and Mam" are acceptable and we all appreciate a "please" and "thank-you" every now and then. Try to order us around and we'll see that you get exactly what you're demanding -- even if it's bite is painful.

6. Don't pull out in front of us -- no one here does that so naturally, no one is expecting it. We're not the ones who drive some foreign Itchiephuchsie tin can that can be totalled by slamming the door.

7. Don't blow your horn at an intersection. Down here that means someone wants to see the dead animal in the back of your truck or ask you about fishing. When they find out what you really want, it won't be pretty.

8. We're here because we live here, our parents and grand parents lived here. As a matter of fact, our ancestors were bad enough to run the natives, British, french, Spanish, and God knows who else out of here. You won't be that much of a problem.

9. We're southern. A lot of our ancestors died trying to make sure we wouldn't have to fool with you. We haven't forgotten.

10. We would rather have a quiet place to fish, hunt, eat, sleep, camp, work, or do stupid things that could get us killed or jailed than have your money.

Hope this helps!:D:D:D

When I lived up north a friend kept his 26 ft fishing boat (Lake Michigan size) in Hammond marina. Lots of those high $$ Fountains and Baja's moored there also. I found it quite funny on any saturday morning those guys would show up at the marina. Fire those hot boats up and set there and rev the engine for a half hour or so. The air litterly shook, you didn't have to hear them you could feel them. After a half hour or so all got quite again. I ask one guy that had one of the boats there why he didn't take it out in the lake and run around a while. His reply was.... I can afford the boat..just can't afford the gas it takes to run it.

Yep, I know a guy that bought a new Fountain last year and he said it cost him $460 to fill it up. He said that would last about a day and a half cause he had twin 509's or some crazy BS. That was last year, I can't imagine what it would be like this year with these gas prices. Too much money for any man with a brain IMO.

Too late, Quackr. It seems that Dr. Laughingas has given up perch-jerking from the front of his pontoon boat in favor of racing sailboats. Said the gals on the sailboats had bigger PFDs or something like that.

Personally, I'd like one of those deck guns like you see on WWII subs.

The best story I ever heard was about a couple of drunk Buckeyes trying to launch a boat at Buckhorn Lake. (They've even found little Buckhorn, sob!) The Buckeye got a good runnygo and slammed on the brakes, trying to sling the boat off the trailer. My buddy got a little closer and immediately identified the problem- the bow was still winched up tight. My friend said, "Hey pal, I think I can help you there." The Buckeye said, "I know what I'm doing. Thanks anyway." He proceeded to spend the next 10 minutes blocking the ramp, pulling and tugging, and just couldn't figure out why the darn boat wouldn't slide off the trailer like everybody else's does!

As dumb as some of us rednecks can be, there just is no comparison to a drunk Buckeye with money, booze and an empty skull!

Yall are missing a perfect opportunity for some cheap but worthwhile entertainment. More than one Sunday afternoon the wife and I have anchored the boat close enough to the ramp to hear and see the action, yet far enough out to avoid the collisions. Some of the shenanigans that you can see will have you in stitches for hours.:)

When I used to work for FedEX in Danville, I'd always have people with boats stop me and ask how to get to Somerset. They would be either from OH, IN, and I think there may have been a few Cards in there as well.:D Instead of telling them to go on to Stanford and turn right on 27, I told them to turn right on 127 in Danville which took them to Liberty. It wasn't THAT big of a detour, but it always made me laugh for the rest of the evening knowing they were lost down there, cussing me, while I would just be cracking open that first beer of the evening. They'd have a $150,000 dollar boat, a $50,000 truck and somehow couldn't afford a $1 map, either that or they were too stupid to read it.:D

Come on now, us buckeyes cant be that bad. Actually for the most part i agree with you. I cant stand any part of ohio besides the southeastern (most rural) part of it. The rest of it is too flat, too populated and not enough trees. Plus the people arent as nice as the ones youll find in my corner of the state.Im about 15 min from kentucky and 20 from westvirginia and plan to move to one of those to places come graduation time. The woods in southeastern ohio are overan with people from the big cities and it gets pretty crazy sometimes. But i will tell you that there are 2 totally different ohios, The area in the appalachian region might as well be lumped in with KY or WV and is a completely different world than the rest of ohio.
