I am just curious if anyone else has had any problems lately with millipedes. My office has been taken over by them. We have sprayed several times, but nothing seems to help. I even sprayed one large millipede with bleach and it just kind of stood up on it's back legs and swayed for a while. I finally just killed it with my shoe. Would Seven Dust kill them?

Not sure about Seven dust but Ortho home defence will send them to millipede heaven.

We hardly ever see the things around here.

Our main problems are spiders and ants.

We had a few large, black ants, but the millipedes are awful. They are almost as bad as the beetles. We actually found several "pods" of them hanging around the back walls of the office. There were hundreds of them inside the pods. The guys at work laughed at me because I will handle snakes, but I am afraid of the millipedes. I tried to explain to them that you can see snakes, but the millipedes are sometimes so small that they blend in with the floors and surroundings. They especially blend in with our uniforms!

I work in a small hospital. It is built in a general rectangular shape, and in the center, there is a courtyard area that is full of plants, trees, mulch, etc. About 6 years ago, we had an infestation of millipedes. I think a lot if not all of them came from the courtyard by crawling under the doors. We had literally thousands of them. Another year, we were infested by crickets. They would come in and start chirping. Sometimes, they would get in patients' rooms in some corner where they couldn't be seen, and the patients would call out for you to come kill them. I started searching them out that year as soon as I walked in the door, and I would even keep a tally of how many I killed each night I worked. One night, I killed 23 crickets, lol!! Now, everytime it rains, earthworms come in the building by the bucketful. There was definitely a design flaw in this place or at least in the courtyard doors, lol!!

My office is old and has wooden floors. There are cracks throughout the entire building. Our problems started with rats! I was working a midnight shift one night and I heard something in the storage room. I went back there and flipped on the lights. There were at least 10, large rats that went scurrying away to hide. I about freaked out. The guys finally managed to kill off the rats. Then, the bugs started pouring in. We had roaches for a short period, then a few spiders, then there was the gray hard shelled worms (not sure what they are called), and now it's the millipedes. I am just waiting for the day when the larger rodents, skunks, possums, etc, find a way in. I really have no desire to be sprayed by a skunk! :D

There are a bunch of good sprays that take care of those pesky critters. The best stuff I've used came in a red jug from ACE hardware. I can't remeber the name (began with an "R"), but it's the best stuff I've ever used to kill anything with more than 4 legs! A couple of years ago, we had a HUGE flea problem at work. Someone dragged a couple of them in from home, and those things ended up thriving in the carpet! We sprayed the carpets with that stuff on Friday night and by Monday the problem was gone.

Lowe's carries a good variety too, for really good prices ($10-15 /gallon). A gallon-size jug will take care of a house all season, or a good sized buliding once. Spray it around before you leave for the evening and you'll not have any bug problems for weeks.

Sounds like the rats were keeping the bugs at bay.... maybe you should consider bringing them back.... :D

Those large black ants could be carpenter ants. You guys may want to get a pest control person in there or one of you may fall through that wooden floor one of these days....

We always called those grey hard shelled worms rolly polies.. they roll up in a little ball when you mess with them.

I am a security officer and yes, we do wear uniforms. They are not anything special, just black pants and a shirt with a badge. :p I tried to get them to allow us to wear skirts, but they said no, no, no! It would be so much cooler in the summer. By the way, I noticed yesterday that there are really small red bugs all over the front of the office. I think some one said that they were usually found on garden plants. Does anyone know what they are called?

Tammy, Those are probally spider mites, they sure can be a problem. You need to get the guys to spray around and under the building with diazinon that will usually help slow down the problem bugs. NOW about the skirts, I'll cast a vote for that, those jump suites have to be too hot this summer. And this snake handling thing, I don't know if someone could convince me to try to teach them about shooting a bow with a snake hanging around their neck!
NO I JUST DON'T THINK MY FEET WOULD STAND STILL FOR THAT, The only good snake is a dead snake.

Our office is located in the "country" so to speak. The bugs usually stay hidden until it rains, but I guess it's the time of year for them to start coming out more.
Highbow, the guys have sprayed countless times over the past six months, but they still come back. The bugs bother me, but I guess I can live with it. I will be ok until I feel one crawling up my leg! Then, I will scream like a little girl! :D By the way, we no longer wear the coveralls. The company issued us new uniforms. They are extremely hot, but they look more professional.

Yeah leggy if you can't tell...these guys REALLY like having you here, as do I like a females opinion and conversation in anything (women have good points and are right a lot)....but please don't post a picture of yourself unless you want a million PM's and emails and have all these guys drooling. But it looks as if you have that going for you already, just look at all the repies to a simple subject as "millipedes"..just think if you were posting up questions about "best knife for gutting a deer" or "I was dropping a new engine in my truck the other day when..." there would be 8 pages of answers in 14 minutes. I ask a question and usually only get about 4 responses :)

We would just like to see a picture so we can more accuratley determine what kind of bow she should be hunting with! So we are going to need pictures from several different angles and poses just for measurement purposes!!

It is good to have a womans point of veiw on here!

Unfortunately it does make a difference in our society cause people in general tend to sterotype almost everyone. You say isn't it the size that counts. Well that could be, but then poor ol' Pooty would be sterotyped bad cause his so called truck is a little bitty ford ranger.:D The real trucks are full sized, 4x4s, with lift kits and skid plates.

06-02-2005, 08:51 AM
Plowboy, come on, you know deep down that you like Pooty's new truck. LOL :p Maybe he just needed something smaller.

About these millipedes, can they bite? If they do, will they infect you with anything?

PhilpotHunter

Wow, talking about a thread taking a dangerous turn to the edge!:D

I downsized my truck because I was getting complaints that mine was too big, and I'd hate to hurt anyones feelings about my size.....of the truck that is.:D

I think the problem with plow is that he thinks he has to make up for something with a big truck?

Bless poor 'ole Pooty's heart! Give him a break. :p It is a nice truck. Like I have already stated, I like other types of vehicles...I was checking out a midnight blue Dodge Ram the other day. It was really nice. Millipedes are scary critters. Just wait until one comes crawling up and over your sock and inches up your leg...then, some of you guys will be weary of them also. :D
