Is the NWTF very active in Kentucky? I am curious to know what sorts of stocking and conservation activities members participate in on weekends. Particularly interested in groups operating near Lexington and in Anderson Co.

The NWTF is very active in KY. I live in Lex. We are converting some fescue ground to warm season grasses down below Wilmore.

In recent years Ky ranked within the top 5 on youth membership
i believe every chapter in the state has jake events...this is a great way to introduce youngsters into the sport so if you havent already signed up a youth ($5 per yr) you should do so also not to mention you can also help out during the jakes day...
helping a youth out is only helping our future..

Welcome! I'm the Kentucky state chapter president, and we'd love to get you involved. Kentucky is one of the most active states in the federation. We lead the nation in many categories, including scholarships, 4-H shooting, seed and habitat subsidies and sponsor membership, just to name a few. Does the KY NWTF sponsor any type of "youth hunt" where under-privileged kids, or kids that have nobody to take them to hunt, are able to be taken out by a volunteer during the youth season to try to take a bird? If so, how could I volunteer to do such a thing. If not, does anybody know of some organization that sponsors this type of thing? I know some groups have squirrel hunts and deer hunts, but I haven't heard of one for turkeys. Any help would be much appreciated.

The state chapter doesn't, but a number of local chapters sponsor them on the youth weekend as a JAKES event. I know the Shelly Nickel Chapter does, and Jim and Pat Williams are really active in that arena. They are on the state board, and you can contact them directly through our website. We were working on the early stages of a Governor's Hunt along those lines, but it has been back-burnered by events in Frankfort, and we'll be developing that over the coming year.
Interestingly, the National convention was held in Louisville in 1992, and a guy got the bright idea to bring inner city schoolkids to the calling contests as a field trip. The response was huge, and that's something we now do every year at the convention.
Your idea is a great one, and definitely I'll see about starting an initiative on a statewide basis.

300, each spring our local C.O. Chuck Warren puts on a youth turkey hunt here in Hardin County. He's always looking for help. Give him a call I'am sure he can find something for you to do. e-mail me and I'll give you his phone number.

300, all hunts are on private land. If you know of a kid who wants to hunt and doesn't have someone to take them, let us know.
After the morning hunt, the kids are fed lunch. Lunch is all wild game and it is all very good. After lunch the kids get to shoot bows, trap, clean and prepare game and may even learn a little about calling turkeys. It's all about the kids..........

Thanks DWP, I don't know of any kid that doesn't have anyone to take them hunting, but I was wanting to find one, so this is something that I will most likely try to participate in. Do you know if the kids bring their own guns, or do they borrow them? I'll get in touch with the CO and see what I can do to help here in the next few days. Thanks again.

They can use their own gun or Chuck has one they can use. You might need to get them a face net and a pair of gloves. When I take a kid on a hunt, I'll go out and buy them a hat, gloves and a face net and give it to them. It can get expensive just starting out, so I like to help them out a little.

I have a blind that I will bring along that they can sit in with me. I will also, most likely, videotape the hunt for them, and send them a copy, so they can show everybody their hunt at home. That might bring more participation for the next year too.

Forgot to mention: one of the reasons I am interested in the NWTF (besides the fact that I do enjoy hunting!) is that my dad was the lawyer in Fredericksburg, Virginia who did the legal work for their incorporation back in about 1973. He's still practicing, and I think he's very pleased to have helped an organization get going that has turned out to be such a great success.

I started turkey hunting two seasons ago and the NWTF last year. Im very proud to be a member of this great organization. The NWTF has done great work in communities across the country. They have helped bring the wild turkey back and turkey hunting to many people. Im very thankul to Rob Keck and the entire NWTF.

I attended the Kincaid Longspurs banquet Saturday night. Couldn't touch the prices the auction stuff went for, but had a great time anyway.
Was very pleased to see a bunch of kids in attendance. I'm pretty sure every kid went home with some sort of door prize, some very nice. The son of a fellow in my local archery club won a new shotgun, 2nd year in a row he's won that drawing. Trying to get him to start picking lottery numbers for me!
