YESTERDAY WHILE CALLING FOR ABOUT AN HOUR ON ONE OF OUR NEW FARMS WE'VE BEEN INVITED TO HUNT, WE DECIDED TO GET UP AND RELOCATE. AFTER WE GOT UP AND WALKED ABOUT 200 YARDS, WE SEEN A BLACK DOT RUNNING ACROSS THE FIELD AT US. I SAID IT HAD TO BE A DOG,WE DROPPED AND PUT OUR SCOPES ON IT AND IT WAS A SOLID BLACK COYOTE AND A GREY MATE. I HAVE HEARD OF THEM BUT NEVER SEEN ONE AND I ALWAYS SAID THEY HAD TO BE HALF DOG OR EVEN A WILD DOG. NO DOUBT SOMEWHERE DOWN THE LINE HE (OR SHE) HAD SOME DOG IN HIM BUT EXCEPT FOR THE BLACK COLOR,HE HAD ALL YOTE FEATURES. THE HEAD,EARS,SIZE,AND THE BUSHY TAIL.WELL,NEEDLESS TO SAY ABOUT 500 YARDS AWAY WITH US IN THE OPEN THEY BUSTED US. I COAXED HIM IN ALITTLE CLOSER BUT THEY DECIDED TO LEAVE. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF VERY MANY OF YOU GUYS OUT THERE HAVE SEEN ONE AND WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF ME GETTING ANOTHER CHANCE AT HIM.

I killed a "normal" colored coyote early in bow season, but while walking in that day I heard some yipping & saw a black something come out from behind some brush. It turned & ran pretty quick, but it sure as heck looked like a coyote. Sounded like one too.
Until I saw this thread I pretty much figured I was mistaken, and it was a dog. Now I'm leaning toward coyote.

Nice picture, BUT.....That ain't no full-blooded coyote. That K-9 looks like someone's german shepherd or a cross. Maybe part red or gray wolf(Canis lupis) but for sure it's not 100% coyote. Fact is, they have DNA from some coyotes that have wolf in them and I think you may have gotten one. Note the tail being held high, that's the characteristic of a wolf. The taxidermist that did the work must have thought it was a wolf too. There are black coyotes, not a common sight, though they do exist. I have never seen a black coyote and I have seen alot of live and dead coyotes, I'm talking thousands. If I had that mount, I'd tell everyone it was a wolf and they would never know difference, Good Hunting-------no matter what that dog is.

hammer my nephew told me about this web sight so i decided to write you. your picture of your
coyote is to dark to see so i was wondering if you could email me one beardsnbucks@aol.com iwould appreciate this. ive seen two black ones in my 5 years of hunting coyotes and they were together with other coyotes.i called one of them in with his potential mate a regular female about 4 years ago. ihave been back several times since seeing them but urban spraw has taken the place i use to hunt. i was also wondering what county you took the coyote in because after i started asking around there was supose to be more than two in that litter from what i was told thanks for your time.

Redneck, I have seen pics of eastern coyotes in different color phases but most look like western coyotes. If you seen a Cream colored coyote I'm sure it was in super prim shape and you should have taken it if you could have. I don't know where you are from but it must get kinda cold there for coyotes to get cream colored. If it was a white Coyote, it could have been an albino, you'd have to see it's eyes to make sure, they would be pink, the sign of a true albino. I seen a white coyote only once in my life, I could have shot it but I let it go. An albino is one in every 100,000 so I thought twice about it and said to myself, good luck coyote.

sorry for the confusion, old coyote and coyote15. I put the little smiley in my post thinking most people would see it and assume I was teasing a bit. This is a picture of an alpha male wolf killed in Saskatchewan after it had killed a steer. I just saw the post title and put up the picture since I'm so fond of it. Thanks. Email sent, coyote15.

Oldyote,

I was deer hunting when I saw that cream colored one (or what i thought was one) I had about 3 areas that I scope out for deer and I looked over my shoulder and saw this (what i assumed) was a dog, cream colored. It was quartering away from me and i saw it for only about 5 secs. Who know what it was? Maybe Ill see him again...

Hammer, like I said, that didn't look like a coyote to me, but it did look kinda like a wolf and it was holding it's tail like one. It is true there are black coyotes out there and as I understand it most are in the east. I have alot of experance predator hunting and I know most of you guys are from the other side of the big river. If I can be of any help, I'd be more then happy to help. No matter what all those so called experts tell you, a coyote is a coyote no matter what side of that big river it lives. Rednick, I'm guessing you didn't shoot it because you didn't want to scare any deer that could have been close by, right? If you do see it again, make sure it ain't got on a collar then nail it, Good Hunting.

If you are going to try to hunt that coyote again I would try a differnt type of call and location. I would try a puppy whine, to do that I like to use my mouth turkey call. How I do that is push the call to the roof of my mouth with extra presure and say the word kwiee. That will produce a high pitched scweal just like a puppy. I have had very good luck with that call when hunting call shy coyotes. With the turkey call you will eliminate your movement, and you can bet that he will be very cautious when coming to a call again.

Heard of a blonde cotote caught in a trap. Chewed off three legs and still was caught. [smile]

Unless that coyote had all three legs in the trap and I don't think so, why would it chew all three off? This must be a blond coyote joke.[;)]

I remember seeing this picture a few years ago on kentuckyhunting.com. If I recall right, wasn't this particular animal was harvested in Canada? This may explain why it's characteristics aren't considered common with the coyotes we have here in Ky.

Sorry Hammer,
I didn't see your 2nd reply of where it was taken.

Adam, that wolf was not to big to be a coyote. There have been coyotes in recent years that would equal that wolf's size. It was not to hard to figer out it was NOT a coyote (not by it's size) but by the look of it's face and the way it holds it's tail. I have personally seen wolves up real close and seen thousands of coyotes, after awhile you kinda know one when you see one, Good Hunting.
