Just wondering how everyones season was going ? what your seeing & such. were just now starting to kill some birds. they've been holding pretty good around where I'm hunting for the past week. the first half of the season was really slow for us but has been picking up pretty good. We have averaged finding 7 birds a day for the last six times in the field & killed 8. hope everyone's having a good season. good gunning to all....G.G.

We had a hunt this week-end. We flew 26 birds, killed 6, 4 cock birds and 2 hens, 1 old bird and 5 young birds. The weather was ruff but we had 5 groups Sat. and 3 groups Sun. On Three week-end hunts this year, we have flown, 98 birds, and killed 23.
I hunted with Larry Robinson this week-end, by the time we got to the truck Sun. we were covered with snow. But it was beautiful, we hunted some cuts and jack pine (hemlock) we flew 3 and took 1.

gunner it sounds like your flying some birds. Where the hell are you hunting, in Canada? What have they been feeding on?

I've taken 7 birds this year 5 of which were adults, only taken one hen. I've shot at 11 birds total. Lately the birds I've taken have had ragwort leaves and honeysuckle berries in their crop.
I'd sure like to find some young ones, they aren't quite as elusive!

majority of the birds are full of green leaves, but did bag two last week, one full of sumac & the other one full of greenbriar berries. Alot of the birds last week were down low in heavy cover, mostly honysuckle but did find quite a few in the clearcuts. If the clear cut had honeysuckle to boot it was just about garaunteed. of the 9 birds I've bagged everyone has been last years hatch & a cock bird, ecept 1 which was atleast a 3 year old cock bird. I hunt in several counties' all beeing in the south east(estill, lee, jackson, owesly, wolfe, breathitt,Mcg offin/johnson line area)with the exception of boyd co.

3rd District Ky. Grouse Hunter here, birds are pretty scarce up here. I'm thinking the stocking program was a washout. Maybe they should have brought the birds in from upper Mich. or some where flatter than east Ky.??? Anyway, don't look like they took. I'm still looking though. Keep you posted.

The 3rd District is "Grouse poor".
In the 3rd District , Ft. Knox is the only place legal to hunt grouse.
According to Ft Knox Hunt Control personell there has never been a legal grouse taken since there has been a season there!

Boys Mark and I flew 15 birds yesterday, had 9 points and killed 1. Old JIM burned them up, Jim is Marks dog. Hunted great cover. Even got one on film, you have to know where to look but it's there. Big it would have taken a team of mules to got you out of that holler. HELL OF A DAY.

Birdman, Me and two buddies hunted the other side of the blacktop, from where you and I hunted, on Sunday. We had 19 flushes, with 11 productive points (3 from the 11 month old, Ruff) and killed 4. Just a great day in the KY grouse woods.

Highbow, it was definately one of those "SPECIAL" days that you really don't appreciate until its over, because there is so much action going on during the actual hunt. I know it sounds like a "fishin tale", but I did some math here at the office and with ll productive points (not counting false points, which were minimal) in about 4.5 hours of hunting, we had a point every 24 minutes. We were hunting Ohio River hills in some of the thickest cedar/honeysuckle/multi-floral rose habitat that you could imagine, which hurt our shooting, but the dog work was special. It was hot and sweaty, and we had scratched and bleeding hands, forearms and faces, but you couldn't smack the smiles off of our faces.[:D]
The old dog put on quite a show, but his pup is the one that really made me proud, especially in front of a couple of my hunting buddies. Let's just say that it won't be necessary for us to have any more of those "english setter vs. gsp" arguements for a while.[;)]

I remember the feelings from such a hunt, I always enjoyed watching the young dogs learn from just such a day, the rose briars are hard on everyone but it is worth the fun and time.

Mark the tape didn't turn out. We'll have to get in there again this year. (is this where the smiley face goes)
I finished editing the tape about 10:30 last night, we got two birds on tape. Not very plain but their there. We always knew a setter was the only dog to hunt grouse with. But sometimes you just have to show um. I'll get you a copy as soon as possible.
Highbow, check my math here!

Those GSPs would probably do well in that area, it's so thick, rain hasn't hit the ground in three months.
