Three southeastern Kentucky residents were arrested Sunday night after leading Florence police on a pursuit through Boone County following a shoplifting incident, investigators said.

Officers were called to the Hansel Avenue Target store about 8:15 p.m. when a man was seen shoplifting boxes of Sudafed. The over-the-counter cold medicine is commonly used in large quantities to produce the illegal stimulant, methamphetamine.

Florence police tried to stop the 1988 black Jeep the shoplifting suspect entered outside the store. Officers pursued the Jeep, which crashed on U.S. 42 near Mount Zion Road. The three occupants were captured after a foot pursuit with Florence police.

A passenger, Walter Durham, of Oneida, Ky., in Clay County, is charged with misdemeanor shoplifting and second-degree fleeing or evading police. He was also wanted on a Clay County warrant for escape.

The Jeep's driver, Shawn Gibson, also of Oneida, is charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. A second passenger, Deborah Reece, of Booneville in Owsley County, is charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police.

All three are in the Boone County Detention Center in Burlington pending arraignment in Boone District Court. No injuries were reported.

A few more crank cookers behind bars! Way To Go! That stuff is getting worse by the minute. Never ceases to amaze me how many times I'm out with my family and see some tweaker at the convience store or fast food joint. You can usually recognize them a mile away.
