View Full Version : Mouth Call Gobbles?

Can anybody fill me in on the proper calling technique to produce a gobble from a diaphragm?
About 1/2 the time, I can make a weak jake gobble using my diaphragm. I produce this sound by holding the call lightly in my mouth and forcefully blowing while moving my tongue as though I were saying "la-la-la-la-la". Other times, the sound will break off almost immediately, and that doesn't sound so hot when it happens. Obviously, there has to be better methods.
I read in some thread where a guy just shook his head. I'm not sure if I want to make that much movement, but I'll try just about anything.
I guess its kind of like purring. Some people use the back of their tongue. Some use the tip (I do), and some just flutter their lips. I'd be interested on the other methods people use.

Sounds crazy,....Keep the call fairly loose in your mouth. Make a sound a shake your head side to side. This is a good starting point to get the "sound", you can work on it from there where it doesn't require "as much" movement. Be carefull you could get a slight headache...
I only try this at an unseen stubborn bird who I know is just "right there"....

Seems kind of obvious now that a couple guys have said that, but just never really thought about doing it, thanks for the help.

Give it a shot,......I can see it now.
Are you in front of your PC right now shaking your head violently side to side:eek:

Ditto on what Mr Beyer said -- you can only practice this so many times and you do get a headache, but it works. Raspy calls seem to work best.

try saying.... tucka tucka tucka
I guess I was saying tucka tucka tucka, sort of like trying to chuckle on a duck call. I guess I just need more practice or should try Perry's recommendation on the head shake (although I probably don't need to shake any more of my marbles loose).

There's always the option of that good ol' tube call....

I gobble by hooking my right hand pointer finger in the left corner of my mouth (palm facing away) and shaking my finger up and down. All you need is a slight constant buzz sound on the mouth call and shake your hand and you've got it. It makes a great jake gobble by allowing you to break the gobble up a bit. Hope this helps...

Great tip. Sounds similar to what Perry was recommending WITHOUT the potential resulting headache. Thx
