I took my 5 year old daughter out Sat. morning to listen for gobblers on the property I hunt. She's been wanting to get out with me for some time now, and with the fine fine weather we had this weekend, I thought, what the hell. Let me tell you, we had a great old time. Didn't hear too many (I heard 3 distinct ones sort of far away, and a couple so far off I'm not even sure, she didn't hear any :-( but getting out with my youngin was priceless.

This is the first time we've ever done anything like this together. She's always been too young. Well, she did absolutely great being out in the woods, walking through the dark next to me with flash light pointed down, staying quite, listening real hard. She did get to hear some owls hooting back an forth pretty close, that was cool, and the spot where we walked to in the woods happened to be right next to a roosted bird. That bird waited as long as it could then started clucking, and flew down. It was still dark, but he/she busted us for sure. Oh well, it was exciiting.

Then, we drove around to another part of the property to check the gate, and in three different fields out in front of our property, there were about 10 birds in each. The last field where the lane cuts through had 2 big ole struting toms. Just fanned out as pretty as you please, strutting for their girls. That was cool, we got to watch the show for 10 minutes or so.

We finished the morning with a big breakfast at Denny's and then back home. This little girl got up at 3 in the morning, slept just a little in the truck both going down and then back, then played hard the rest of the day. I was pretty impressed seeing as how I was way ready for a nap that afternoon! :-)

Great memories, can't wait until she's old enough to actually go with me.

That was a great story. It was special for me to have my son with me when I killed my first turkey last week. That is something you will never forget. Sounds like you got a hunting partner!

Awesome Story, Thanks for posting!

Sure is something special about kids and the outdoors. I recently got to experience one of my greatest times in the woods with my son. A memory I'll not forget.

I'm with you man -- that is awesome -- I should have took my 7 year old girl out for my scouting trip. My girl is on the tall side and does gymnastics (stronger than a little girl should be) so I am hoping at 8 she can handle a youth hunt. Right now she handles a youth 410 and loves it, so maybe I can move her up to a 20 next year, but if not surely the year after at 9 (if she stays in the tall side). She can hold a youth 20 right now, but I am afraid to ruin her if it kicks too much -- so I am trying to wait, but I should have done like you and just took her out. But I do take her for rabbit and dove -- she makes a great retriver on a hot day ;).

I hope so.

The funny thing is that my Daughter is a little princess type. Everything's got to be in pink, wears dresses all the time, tells me when I'm wearing something that doesn't match! :) But, she wants to hunt with me. She thought it was real cool when I brought her home some jr size camo to wear.

Hey, I figure at a minimum, if I can raise her to reject the philosophy of the anti's, that will be good enough. If she does become my hunting partner, that will be just icing on the cake.

That's great!!! Been able to talk my girlfriend in to coming along sometimes when I'm out scouting, and she is going with me opening morning on Wednesday. It's nice to hunt alone sometimes, but it's a whole different experience sharing the woods with someone. Can't wait til I can take my kids out.
