I hunted today, and had a great time as always. I had decoys out, and was clucking. alittle later I went to purring. No luck! Then i went to yelping, something i personally have not found to bring the best results. I have always found purring, Clucking, or cutting to be my best result.
I started yelping, and heard a cluck...... I see a nice gobbler, and he is clucking, and eating away. I have a hen, and jake decoy in plain site. he keeps coming in, but seems to ignore them. Everytime i yelp, he seems to cluck more. Finally he just walks away.
Can anyone explain this, and give me some advice? What did i do wrong?
Did the decoys spook him, or did he figure why bother since there already together? It was about 8:30 a.m.
Thanks, mike

Decoys might have spooked him, maybe too much calling, maybe he saw you, maybe he got a piece of dirt in his eye! Turkeys are strange like that. What they like one day will send em running the next. My guess is you might've been calling to much. Once you have a bird in sight and he sees the dekes then kill the calling. If he just hangs out out of range then try some super soft stuff, maybe some scratching in the leaves. If that doesn't work then leave the dekes at home the next time.

He might have not been the dominant bird in the area, and might have been whipped a couple times already, and didn't want to risk it. Never know with turkeys though.

i have to agree with the answers already given...or maybe you was sitting where the sun made you stand out or your gun could have shined if the sun light hit it

I'd like to know if it was contented, soft "clucking" or a more sharp pitched "something is wrong here" cluck. There is a difference. I have had turkeys, particularly a group of jakes, cluck with nervousness and won't come in any closer and except that is a bit more "sharp" and done often by all the birds you could hardly tell the difference.

It was pretty loud, but he was feeding, and coming closer. he was in view of the decoys. I was in the woods, and I doubt he saw me, but I probably called too much. I was more fired up than he was.
I guess i should have laid off on the calling, but couldn't help myself. I'll be out there again on wednesday. Did I blow it, or do you think i still have a chance. Thanks, mike
