Ok I just figured out the a difference in compound vs recurve and it's power stroke (beyond the cams of course).

A recurve has a 14-16 inch power stroke (the distance the bow string travel)

But a compound has an 11.5 to 13 power stroke.

Now beyond the distance you have to pull the bow string (thus making it more difficult) what else does that mean to the hunter.

Speed of the bolt, longer power stroke, the faster the arrow speed.

well some of the compounds have a shorter power stroke but faster fph. (which I'm assuming is related to speed of power stroke).

any other positive or negative impacts of the power stroke length.

The recurve has the big advantage of the user being able to change the string easily when needed. The compounds will have to go to a shop.

Yeah I'm sold on that issue.

But now I have to grapple with the

Phoenix at 14 power stroke and exocet at 15.5

almost the same money and fps.

Here is my current line up in order of preference.

Excaliber Phoenix $355 + accesories, Excaliber exocet $325-350+ accesories, Or PSE Maxim $275-300 (with quiver and arrows) only needs a scope.

Is the Excalbier xbow proprietary on the quiver and arrows or is that something I can try to pick up used or on ebay etc.

Beware of trigger poundage as well Shogan. Your cheaper xbows have nasty triggers. 3and a half pounds is the industry bench mark at present.

xbows are like guns in the fact that easier the trigger the better the shot.

Check out the Parker xbows before you spend your hard earned cash. 3 and 3 quarter pound triggers and very quiet by x bow standards.

I saw two of the Parker crossbows at Sanders Archery in Edmonson Co. They are very nice looking weapons. In the 500.00 to 600.00 range .

499 at basspro and I think the local shop in Danville had it a few bucks cheaper.

Thats the parker I had on my shoulder and I really like the light weight and feel. I was not able to shoot it and I don't know anything about the quality. When talking to folks the Parker name just never came up. Seems like if I asked they say yeah their good too. But it didn't roll off their tongues like Ten Point and Excalber and even that other one Horton.

But with that said the proshop did highly recommend the parker and at the price range of 499 makes it very competitive with 10 and ex.

And here is a good one with 3 dot scope.

I have shot two crossbows, Barnett Revolution, and a Pse Diamondback Viper, both seemed to be somewhat loud and not really anymore accurate than a good compound. I would say for what they cost they would be fine to start out with if someone didnt want to spend a lot of money. As I have said before I dont have one or want one but I do support the use of them. I have a friend who is disabled and has the Barnett and he is very pleased with it.

Not The Pse Viper Anything But The Pse Viper

I dont think it would be my first choice if I were wanting one, but my uncle has one and after sighting it in it seemed to be a good enough for the money crossbow. Accurate enough but not a tack driver. He said he got it to hunt deer with not field mice. I have read negative things about it though.
